John Leslie McFarland Jr.

John was born on October 13, 1948, in Tyronza, Arkansas, to John L. McFarland Sr. and Ruthy Mae (McCoy) McFarland. One of eleven children, John grew up alongside ten siblings—six sisters and four brothers—including his fraternal twin brother, Vern L. McFarland. Following the family’s migration to Benton Harbor, Michigan, John attended Bard Elementary School and Benton Harbor High School, where he began building the foundation for a life rooted in dedication and hard work.

John entered the workforce with a strong work ethic that carried him through many years of service in various roles. He worked as a machine operator at Bendix Corporation, served in janitorial services at the YMCA, worked as a bridge operator, and later at Woolen Manufacturing, where he remained until his retirement. Throughout his career, John was known for his reliability, commitment, and integrity.

Outside of his work, John found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He loved cooking and took pride in preparing meals for others, often with music playing in the background. A fan of R&B and soul music, he also enjoyed unwinding with classic cowboy movies. Known as the life of the party, John had a big personality and an even bigger presence—often the loudest voice in the room and the one who brought laughter wherever he went.

In 1967, John married Mary Jane (Mae) McFarland, beginning a chapter of life that spanned many years. John was the proud father of six children—Glen, Shanida, Carlette, Irving, Tony, and Fredrick—each representing an important part of his life’s story.

In June 2024, John accepted the Lord, a decision that marked a meaningful chapter in his life and brought him peace in the years that followed.

John is survived by seven siblings, Ruby Wiley, VernaDean Adams, Vern L. McFarland, Leslie Harding, Captolla McFarland, LaRita McFarland, and Golden Harris, along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and a host of extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. McFarland Sr. and Ruthy Mae (McCoy) McFarland, and his siblings, Holden Harris, Clemintine Stoutmiles, and Edward McFowler.
