Steve is survived by his beloved son, Matthew Nathaniel Dawson, born from his union with his former wife, Shelia Dawson; his devoted sister, Judy Dawson Jones; and his brother-in-law, Floyd Jones. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Cephus Dawson and Nathaniel Dawson, whom he loved deeply and honored throughout his life.
Born on October 10th, 1953, Steve grew up in Cleveland, where his curiosity, intelligence, and love of learning quickly became evident. He attended John Adams High School, where he was active in the science club, played on the football team, and performed in the marching band. His academic excellence earned him three college scholarships, and he went on to graduate from Purdue University in Lafayette, Indiana, with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
Steve began his professional career at Alcoa in 1978 as a supervisor. His entrepreneurial spirit later led him to build his own business in skilled manufacturing mechanical parts for government contracts. Over the years, he worked in various roles, each one giving him opportunities to do what he loved most — talking with people from all walks of life. Steve never met a stranger; conversation came naturally to him, and he had a gift for making others feel seen and valued.
A man of many passions, Steve loved reading, music, physics, and math. He played both the clarinet and saxophone, filling his home and community with the joy of his music. Known for his generous spirit, Steve was always willing to help others — often putting their needs before his own. He was a giver at heart, a loving and devoted son, father, and brother, and a steady presence to those fortunate enough to know him.
Steve cherished time spent with his son, Matthew, who was his greatest pride and joy. He also enjoyed playing golf and staying connected with friends and family. His warmth, humor, and kindness will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
