Susan M. Myers, age 75. Beloved mother of Steve Kachmyers (Emily) and Katie Kachmyers. Loving grandma of Gabe, Simon, Margie, and Joan. Cherished daughter of the late Don and Loretta Myers (nee Yunker). Dear sister of David Myers (Barb), Diane Mackin (Chuck), Michael Myers (Paula), Larry Myers (Stephanie), Nancy Myers, and the late Patrick Myers. Treasured friend of Barb Mears and Peg McDermott whose friendship was forged in the classrooms of Cleveland and endured beyond their time teaching. Also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
Susan was born and raised in Elyria, Ohio. As the second-oldest of seven children, she was often relied upon by both her parents and her younger siblings as an extra set of capable and loving hands, as protection from the boogeyman that haunted the attic of their house, or as a close friend and confidant throughout her life.
She graduated from Elyria Catholic High School and Cleveland State University.
As a young adult, Susan moved to the Near West Side of Cleveland where she became a part of a close-knit community that was devoted to peace, social justice, and a deep love for the urban core of Cleveland. There, she put down roots–formed friendships, raised her children, and built a life in this beautiful neighborhood where she remained firmly planted until the very end.
Sue was a passionate educator and advocate for the youth of Cleveland. She began her teaching career at Urban Community School, then in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District, most notably at Lafayette Contemporary Academy and Margaret Ireland. Fueled by her daily dose of McDonald’s coffees, she taught her young students with love, patience, and a wonderful imagination. A proud Cleveland Teachers Union member, she was a strong advocate for her colleagues and a union rep for several years.
Although she never witnessed a World Series championship in her 75 years on this planet, she remained a die-hard Cleveland baseball fan until her final days. She attended the Home Opener as a tradition for years dating back to the Municipal Stadium era. Some of her happiest memories were spent near the water–whether on the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard or under the shade of the trees at Camp Christopher with a book in her hand.
From the birth of her first grandchild in 2009 she relished her new identity as Grandma Susie–filling stockings on Christmas to the top with Malley’s Chocolates, employing her old teacher tricks to help with homework, and always finding ways to make her favorite people on the planet feel special.
The family will receive friends for visitation on Thursday April 16, from 4-7pm at Craciun Berry Funeral Home, 7200 Detroit Ave, Cleveland, OH 44102. A memorial ceremony will be held on Friday April 17th, time and location will be announced by the family in the coming days.
