Born October 23, 1931, in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, to William and Helen Koerner, Bonnell’s early years were shaped by the resilience of the Great Depression and the joy of simple things, especially time spent on her grandparents’ farm. She was energetic and spirited, a cheerleader in high school and, always, an athlete at heart.
In 1953, she married Harry B. Maple, and together they built a life defined by devotion, adventure, and family. Over 64 years of marriage, they raised five children, Scott, Dean, Jill, Bonnie, and Joy, and created a legacy that now includes twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren
Bonnell was a lifelong learner, attending California State College (now Pennsylvania Western University – California) and continually growing in both skill and curiosity. Gifted with her hands and mind, she became an accomplished seamstress, quilter, and teacher eventually sharing and selling her creations. Professionally, her analytical mind and interest in numbers led her to accounting roles with Pittsburgh Steel, The Rouse Company, and several Connecticut businesses, continuing her work until age 70. She embraced new challenges eagerly, even mastering computers later in life.
She was a steady and loving presence always there when needed. Whether guiding her children, caring for her grandchildren, or answering a joyful call from across the world, she met each moment with warmth and encouragement.
In later years, she found joy in friendships at the Madison Senior Center and Harbor Chase of Madison. She was grateful for the care and companionship she received from Donna Machold, Heather Noblin, and the nursing staff of HCM.
Bonnell lived a life of quiet strength, creativity, and unwavering love deeply woven into the lives she leaves behind.
A memorial service will be held at a future date. Interment will be in Howe Cemetery, Coal Center, Pennsylvania.
