Joyce Duran

Joyce Duran, formerly of Valley Road in Clinton, CT died on January 15, 2011 at Apple Rehab in Old Saybrook, CT at the age of 90. She was the wife of the late Adolph (Al) Duran and the mother of Barbara Shaw (Frank) of Branford, Timothy Duran (Lori) of Florida and Thomas Duran (Wendy) of California, grandmother of George Shaw of Massachusetts, Jonathan Shaw of New York, Jason Duran of Florida, Jessica Berman of California and Geoffrey Duran of Nevada. Also great-grandmother of Renatto and Laszlo Shaw of Massachusetts. She also leaves several nieces and nephews with special thanks to her niece Angela Schumack of Clinton who spent much time with her. Joyce was born December 1, 1920 in Yonkers, NY, the daughter of Angela and Frank Cammarata. She was predeceased by six siblings: Raymond, Vincent, Frank, Gabriel, Constance and Edward. She led a full and joyful life. She was an expert roller skater and belonged to a skate dancing team in NY, attended art school and the Traphagen School of Fashion, and was a World War II veteran, having served in the WAAC. She and her husband met on the army base in Albuquerque, NM where they were married, she wearing a gown made of parachute silk. After moving in 1955 to Clinton, she became a master bridge player, giving lessons to many and belonging to several bridge clubs, and is a past president of the St Mary's Altar Society. She worked for many years in the Clinton Town Hall First Selectman's office. Joyce was known for her world-class cooking, her enormous sense of humor and warm, loving personality. She will be greatly missed by everyone who ever knew her. Special thanks from her family for the care and loving attention of the staff at Apple Rehab in Old Saybrook. Family will receive friends from 4 - 7 p.m. Monday at the Swan Funeral Home, 80 E. Main Street, Clinton. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Church of the Visitation, 54 Grove Street, Clinton with Committal to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the American Cancer Society , Meriden Executive Park, PO Box 1004, Meriden CT 06450 in memory of Joyce Duran.
