Martha “Marty” Griswold Hull, Age 93, widow of Pierce J. Hull, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Friday April 10, 2026, at The Summit of Plantsville, in Southington, Connecticut. Martha was born July 30, 1932 in Middletown, Connecticut to her late parents, Mary Holbrook Griswold and Stanley W. Griswold. She grew up in Westbrook and graduated from the Morgan School, where she was voted “class dancer” and was a proud member of the self-declared “Morgan Girl’s Club”. She and the other “girls” maintained a lifelong friendship, getting together for lunches well into their late 80’s.
After high school graduation, Martha moved to Glastonbury where she resided with her Aunt Helen. She worked as a secretary at the State Capitol in Hartford where she met Bernard J. Flynn. They were married in 1953 and together raised six children in Wolcott on Hitchcock Lake. She cherished the years living on the lake with year-round picnics and gatherings with family and friends.
Martha lived for her children, making sure they had all they needed. She was always involved in school activities and studies. She enjoyed carting her children around town in an old station wagon (without seat belts) to church, lessons, recitals, sports, the mall, and more.
Having been born in July, on the Connecticut shoreline, Martha was a true beach girl. She loved long, lazy days at the beach, and she most especially loved the late afternoons by the ocean. Family summer vacations to Old Orchard Beach, Maine and trips home to the Connecticut shoreline created endless joyful memories.
In 1978, Martha returned to her hometown. While at a wedding, she was happily reacquainted with her high school sweetheart, Pierce “Perky” Hull. They were married in Clinton on July 16, 1979, marking the start of a new home and life together. As Perky welcomed Marty’s six children, Marty welcomed Perky’s five.
For the next 25 years, Marty and Perky remained deeply devoted to each other. Their time together was filled with friends, travel, and their shared enjoyment of the Connecticut shoreline, music, and always, their children and grandchildren. They shared a remarkable life and love story, marked, at once, by both simple pleasures and deeply rich connections.
A woman of faith, Martha was a kind and sweet woman. She possessed a wonderful sense of humor and always had a smile on her face. She loved babies, music, dancing, the theatre, reading, holiday celebrations, the beach, and boating. She will be most remembered for her love and devotion to family, kindness, generosity, laughter, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
Martha is survived by and will be dearly missed by her daughters, Maureen Hayes-Smith, widow of Joseph, of Southington, CT, Eileen Flynn Hawkins (Craig) of Yarmouth, ME, and son Bernard M. Flynn of Bristol, CT; stepchildren David Hull (Andrea) of Deep River, CT, Peggie Hull Sypher (Richie) of Deep River, CT, Diane Hull Foss of Paige, TX, Jeffrey Hull (Mary Kay) of Lakeworth, FL, Shelley Hull Braza (Kevin) of Westbrook, CT; grandchildren, Patrick J.
