Alfred came to the United States when he was 14 years old through the Lutheran Charities organization. He made the long journey on a US troop ship (alone) and lived with his aunt and uncle in Michigan until his mother and younger brothers came several years later. Alfred served in the US Army in the 3rd Missile Battalion and married his beloved Phyllis after his discharge in 1962. After the military, he had a 42 year career at the Detroit Edison company in data processing and received an Alex Dow Award for innovative thinking. Alfred also taught computer programming at Macomb Community College. He enjoyed spending time with his kids and grandkids, camping, and taking group tour bus trips.
Alfred is survived by his children: David J., Robert J. (Julie), and Carolyn S. (Adam) Reed; grandchildren: Brett, Jaret, Brooke, Ashley, Tyler, and Kaitlyn; and brother, Erich (June) Wagner. He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Wagner, and brother, Hugo Wagner.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026 from 10am-12pm, with a funeral service at 12pm, at Kaul Funeral Home - 35201 Garfield Rd, Clinton Twp, MI 48035. Alfred will be laid to rest at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East in Clinton Twp, MI following the services.
