As a young adult, David excelled in playing the baritone horn, the Sousaphone, and the tuba, played in the Fowlerville, Michigan high school marching band. He was chosen to go to Interlochen Music Camp in Michigan, and the Kansas City National Band.
He joined the Coast Guard in 1951, served for 3 years active duty during the Vietnam War, and 3 years as a Reservist. During his working 34 years at Chrysler Corporation, he owned a transmission shop in Utica, Michigan. He was also an avid boatman and owned several boats, the last one being 38- foot Chris Craft Commander. He was a licensed charter boat captain of the Great Lakes.
He was very interested in photography and videography, and produced many Johnson Family events.
He is survived by his wife, Edith (Johnson) Kitchen; two half-brothers and a half-sister, Dale (Ruth) Sanderson of Seattle, WA, Francine Kitchen, Bellingham, WA, and Michael (Mickey) Kitchen of Portland, OR. Also survived by brother-in-laws, Donald (Evelyn) Johnson and Jim Spencer; and sister-in-laws, Mary Schwarznau, Nancy Johnson, and Mary Jo Johnson; plus many, many, many loving nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
A visitation for David will be held Wednesday, August 30, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kaul Funeral Home, 35201 Garfield Rd, Clinton Township, MI 48035. A visitation will occur Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 35201 Garfield Rd, Clinton Township, MI 48035. A memory share will occur Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 11:00 AM, 35201 Garfield Rd, Clinton Township, MI 48035. A graveside service will occur Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East, 38425 Garfield Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038.
