He was born on January 11, 1925, in Cairo, Illinois, to Ted and Helen Hall, the eldest of their six children. As a child, Ernie struggled with severe asthma, which led doctors to doubt he would live a long life. Seeking relief in a drier climate, Ernie moved to Arizona as a young man, where he worked with the military during World War II.
After the war, he returned briefly to Illinois, just in time to join his cousins on a move to Michigan in search of work. It was there that his life truly began to take shape. While staying with family, he was introduced to Eleanor June Pierce. They married on September 5, 1947, and settled in Hazel Park, where they raised their family.
Ernie found work at Ford as a cutter-grinder skilled tradesman, retiring after 42 years. Outside of work, he and Eleanor shared a deep love for dancing — square dancing, round dancing, and ballroom dancing — and built lasting friendships through the dancing community. They were married for 72 joyful years until Eleanor’s passing in 2019.
In the years that followed, Ernie found comfort and happiness in the presence of his family. Whether taking quiet trips to Heritage Park to feed his favorite squirrels or enjoying phone calls with his sisters, he cherished life’s simple pleasures and remained grateful for his many blessings.
Ernie leaves behind a legacy of love and is survived by his children, Pamela (David) Detzler, Larry (Vicki), and Gary (Mitzie); his grandchildren, John, Matthew, and Robert (Sarah); great-grandchildren, Kristina, Richard, and Stephanie; four great-great-grandchildren; his youngest sister, Carolyn Case; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Eleanor, as well as four of his siblings.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 6, 2025 from 1-6 PM at Resurrection Funeral Home, 40800 Hayes Road, Clinton Township, Michigan 48038. A brief gathering of a final farewell will take place Thursday, August 7, 2025 at 10 AM also at Resurrection Funeral Home, followed by a committal service and burial at White Chapel Memorial Park Cemetery.
