This is not an April Fool’s joke—though those who knew James Burton Hudgins would understand why it might seem like one. A lifelong jokester with a playful spirit, James passed away the evening of March 31, 2026, just hours before April Fool’s Day—perhaps his final well-timed joke. He was 83 years old.
James was born on July 25, 1942, in Roanoke, Virginia, to his parents, Stephen Byrd and Georgia Imogene (née Mounts) Hudgins. He spent his early childhood in Roanoke before his family began a series of moves, eventually graduating from high school in Gainesville, Georgia.
James went on to live a full and hardworking life, building a long and storied career. He spent many years working in construction as an excavator until his retirement at the age of 55. Never one to sit still for long, he then opened his own truck driving business. Through it all, he took great pride in providing for his family, who meant everything to him.
Above all else, James was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Frances “Fran” (née Roberts), and a loving, involved father to his two sons. He was a constant presence in their lives—coaching Little League teams, cheering from the stands at every high school game, and offering unwavering support every step of the way. When his grandchildren came along, he happily took on the role of “assistant coach pops,” often found on the sidelines—or even on the field—encouraging and guiding them with the same enthusiasm and love.
In his free time, James had a passion for cars, especially hot rods. Over the years, he owned more than 30, with his favorite being a classic 1955 Chevy. He also enjoyed attending car shows, where he could share stories and admire the craftsmanship of others. In his spare time, he enjoyed his home up north in Durand, deer hunting and creating lasting memories.
James was a man of faith and a member of the Church of Christ, carrying his beliefs with him throughout his life.
James is survived by his loving wife, Fran Hudgins; and his sons, Todd (Sarah) Hudgins and their children, Garrett Hudgins and Truman Hudgins, and Stephen (Karie) Hudgins and their children, Jordan Hudgins and Keegan Hudgins. He is also survived by his sisters, Bonnie (Mark) Copeland, Amy Hudgins, and Stephani Hudgins.
James was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen and Georgia Hudgins.
Funeral services will be private, and the Hudgins family will hold private memorial services.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make contributions in memory of James may do so to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital. A link to donate online is included below.
