John Edward Forsell, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, passed away peacefully on July 14, 2024, at the age of 80. Born May 17, 1944, John lived a life rich in happiness and memorable experiences, most notably when he found the love of his life, Diana, at the Sanders Ice Cream Shoppe soda fountain. They married in May 1965 and shared 58 years of love and companionship until Diana’s passing in 2023.
John retired from TRW, where he worked as a machine operator, always on the midnight shift. His dedication didn’t stop there, as he also held a second job at Baker’s Shoes, where he became a top shoe salesman. In his younger years, John worked as a caddy at Lockmoor Club in Grosse Pointe Woods.
John was a fabulous shopper and frequented Costco, Ollie’s, Meijer, and enjoyed visiting the staff at the Chase Bank in Sterling Heights. He was an expert coupon clipper, often indulging in the Home Shopping Network and QVC. John was passionate about coin-collecting and playing cards—pinochle, euchre, and especially gin rummy. He also enjoyed fishing and golfing with friends. He considered himself a foodie, especially when it came to barbecue and the meals that earned his highest praise, he deemed scrumptious.
His unique license plate with “008” was a nod to his playful spirit, even though he desired “007”. He enjoyed music by ABBA, The Moody Blues, and Blondie, but his favorite song was “Unchained Melody” by The Righteous Brothers. Known for his happy-go-lucky disposition, John was always whistling and smiling. His sweet spirit and agreeable nature were encapsulated in his favorite phrase, “doo-tah-do.” Often referred to as everyone’s Papa, John’s joyful presence and infectious positivity made him a beloved figure in the lives of many.
John was preceded in death by his loving wife, Diana. He was the beloved father of Barbara (Ted) Chudzik and John L. (Lisa) Forsell; the cherished grandfather of Nickolas (Lauren) Yearego, Alex (Kristin Anderson) Chudzik, Abbey Chudzik, Grace and William Forsell; and great-grandfather of Mila Yearego. He was the dear brother of Edward, Lenaya and the late Andrea. He is also survived by many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 8, 2024 from 12:00 pm until 3:00 pm at the Sterling Heights Lions Club, 12828 Canal Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48313.
