Lucy D. Wood of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (formerly of Eastpointe, MI and Roseville, MI), passed away on September 30, 2016 at the age of 101 1/2. She was born Lucy D. Kyselka on March 10, 1915 in Traverse City, Michigan. Lucy was happily married for 64 years to her beloved husband, Walter (Lee) L. Wood, who preceded her in death. They had two children, Dorothy L. Wood and Gregory L. Wood. Lucy is survived by Gregory L. Wood (Donna).
Lucy was a wonderful person, she was caring and sweet. Her friends and extended family enjoyed her very much. She had a quirky and fun sense of humor and everyone enjoyed being with her. She was invariably polite and kind and her caregivers loved talking to her and being with her.
Lucy loved to knit, crochet and learn new crafts. She and Lee belonged to square and round dance groups and she loved to share patterns and recipes with the members of these groups. Lucy also shared patterns and knitting projects with her sister, Emma. Lucy and Emma would debate the pros and cons of patterns and help each other when they could not get a pattern to work “just right”. Lucy kept her family supplied with beautiful sweaters, afghans, embroidered pictures and other crafts. Her dear daughter, Dorothy, loved the sweaters her Mother made and wore them often. Lucy provided many babies with booties and soakers. She loved to knit for the babies.
Lucy loved flowers and her gardens were always full of roses. She spent many happy hours in her gardens and loved to show everyone her beautiful roses. Lee sent her special flowers for every occasion and, for her 100th birthday, her friends and relatives sent her many bouquets, including a special bouquet of 100 flowers. She gloried in the attention she received for her special birthday.
Lucy always was interested in the future, in new ideas and in the news. Until her eyesight gave out, she read the paper every day and knew all of the politics of the day. She enjoyed the democratic process and worked for many years at the polls for every election. She was very proud of her work to help make the electoral process work well.
Even at 99, Lucy was excited about new experiences. She went on her first sleigh ride at age 99 with her great-great grandniece, Grace. Lucy enjoyed a four-wheel drive tour with her cousins, Kristy & Jeremy Hooper, through their vineyard at age 97. She took a golf cart ride in Lake Ann with her great-grandnephew, Justin, at age 95. She enjoyed these experiences very much and was so excited to learn new things.
Lucy was very family oriented. She was loved very much by her nieces and nephews who spent many happy hours with her. She will be greatly missed by nieces and nephews; Diane & Charles Herbert, Linda Fath-Azam, and John & Jenny Besko. Also by her grand nieces and nephews, Stacey Malott & Cecil, Kenneth & Sandy Malott, Siena & Heather Fath-Azam, Sheila & John Shideler and Michael Besko. Great-grandnieces and nephews, Timothy, Kenneth, Courtnie & Caleb. Her dear friend and former neighbor, Debbie Griffin, who visited her every week for many years will miss her also.
Lucy was preceded in death by her loving parents and stepmother; Leo G. Kyselka, Dorothy Kyselka, and Antonia Kyselka. She was also preceded in death by her beloved brother and sisters, Rosanna Kyselka Besko (Michael), Emma Kyselka Stephens (Herman) and Albert L. Kyselka (Dorothy).
Lucy and Lee were happiest when they were dancing. They enjoyed all types of dance; square dancing, round dancing, and ballroom dancing. Lucy made many of her own square dancing dresses and knitted her own shawls and sweaters. Her happiest memories were of dancing with Lee and she often said that she could not wait to join Lee and dance forever with him. They are surely happily dancing.
