Roy and Pat have been our best friends for many years. My children have called him uncle for over 60 years. I will miss him and remember him always for the many thoughtful things he has done for my husband and me over the years. I want to send love to all his children and to Pat's children. I Hope to see you soon Pat.

Lombardo family ,I am so sorry for your loss,I will keep you in my thoughts,I really liked Roy Sr.,& boy was he a character ,I have known him since the middle 1970's,and he will be missed by me and all of us ,Take Care.

Wow! Where to begin?  I'll keep it short, but Mr. L was really an amazing guy.  He lived a great life and really had it all... I started out at the LCP as just another punk kid, but grew to admire Mr. L pretty quickly.  Guess that's why I kept on at Little Caesars for 8 years.  He was a good sized influence in my life.  He taught me how to work hard, how to enjoy the things you worked hard for, and how to treat people extremely well.  No doubt, I loved him like a grandfather. He loved his family above all else... and everyone related to him, should be very proud to say that they were.  I know the things I learned from him, will live on in me forever.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all after the loss of a truly great man. Although he has moved on, I know I will always remember the great memories that I personally shared with him. It was with great gratitude, I had the privilege of working for Mr. L for over 8 years. During that time, I grew to love Mr. L like a grandfather and looked up to him and his dedication to his life, his family, and his work. See when you worked for Mr. L and the entire Lombardo family, you eventually feel like family and that’s because they treat like family, and it always started with Mr. L. 

When he would come into the store ready to work hard and check in with us, he never hesitated to pat you on the back for a job well done, or ask you how your life was going, and genuinely cared to know. He will be missed by many, but his memory and love will live on through the hearts of all of us whom he touched. Though going in to get a pizza won't feel quite the same without him behind the counter…  I know he will always be there in spirit ready to grab the counter or answer a phone. Mr. L, thank you for being an amazing person in my life. I will always remember!

One of the things, I remember about Mr. L is the time that I was hit by a car while riding a bicycle 13 years ago. Mr. L came down to the hospital as soon as he found out. For the next six days I spent in the hospital, Mr. L was there everyday. He would bring me something to read and offer to bring food for me. "I've had the food here before," he would say sticking his tongue out with a sour face. 

John Drazba summed up pretty well the love and affection everyone that worked for him had for him-"I feel like I lost one of my grandpa's today."

Okay all you baseball fans, what person currently associated with Little Caesars Pizza grew up playing baseball in his early days in Detroit, Michigan, actually played for a professional baseball farm league team, and was involved with a professional softball team that included several retired Detroit Tigers? If you answered Michael Ilitch, you get
an "A". If you answered Roy Lombardo, you also get an "A".

 Roy is a Little Caesar franchisee (#54) and owns a store in Clinton Township, Michigan. It's a traditional carry-out/delivery unit he bought in 1979. It is not, however, his first venture with Michael Ilitch or Little Caesars Pizza. His history with Ilitch actually began before the first Little Caesars Pizza Treat opened.

 Roy, who was raised in the Detroit area, played Class D Federation baseball in the mid 1940's when he was the tender age of 16 and 17. Roy talks about those days as if he were still living them. "We lost to Mike Ilitch's team and then they won the National Title. Mike was a better baseball player than me, but who knows how history might have changed if we'd won that game" he chuckles.

 Ilitch went on to play the Detroit Tigers farm system where he did well, playing short stop until an injury sidelined his career. Roy on the other hand, joined a Chicago farm team but became homesick mid-season and returned to Detroit. That wasn't the end of Roy's ball playing career, though it was partly responsible, for his reunion with Mike Ilitch. After Ilitch opened his first Little Caesars Pizza Treat he continued to support baseball in Detroit by sponsoring several amateur softball teams. Lombardo played second base on one of these teams.

 In 1962 when Ilitch, who wanted to begin franchising, invited Lombardo to buy out his interest in Little 'Caesars Pizza Treat II for $5,000.00, Roy jumped. "It was a good store, located in Warren at Hoover and 11 Mile Road," he says. "We served all sorts of things you don't see today, like broasted chicken and fish, and it was carryout and delivery. Now it's been replaced by a freeway overpass."

 Although he sold the Little Caesars in Warren after just two years to his cousin, Roy continued his association with Ilitch and Detroit sports as he managed the Little Caesars softball team to World Championships in 1966 and 1970, and runner-up finishes in 1967 and 1971. Lombardo was such a successful manager that when Mike Ilitch formed the Detroit Caesars, a professional softball team, Roy was named general manager.

 “We had several Detroit Tiger players on the team. "Stormin Norm" Cash, Jim Northrup and Mickey Stanley in particular. We won the league title in 1977 and 1978, and we had more fans at our games than any other team in the league.“

 Both Lombardo and Ilitch were named to the Metro Detroit Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1983.

 Lombardo, whose career also includes 34 1/2 years as a clay modeler at General Motors ("I actually worked on the Corvette Sting Ray"), is happy with his Little Caesars Pizza store in Clinton Township. "Of course now there is plenty of competition up and down the street, but we still do quite well.”

 Both his sons are partners with Roy in the business, and he says he's glad to still be a part of Little Caesars. "My wife would never let me sell the store," he says with a grin. "She knows I'd be bored stiff" With the career Roy Lombardo's had, she's probably right.
