Dave, son of Dennis and Carol Jean Barrett, was born in San Jose, California, on September 2, 1976, the ninth of ten children. He was active in Boy Scouts and earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Dave graduated from San Benito High School in 1995 but put college on hold to fulfill his desire to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for two years. Dave was called to serve in the Canada Toronto West Mission where he experienced the joy of sharing the message of the restored gospel, helping others improve their lives, serving communities and trekking through sub-zero temperatures.
Dave attended Brigham Young University for several semesters before transferring to UC Davis where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. He attended St Louis University Medical School from 2002-2006. Amidst the rigors of class and rotations, he made several lifelong friends. They spent many hours studying together – with a good mix of fun too. Dave enjoyed living in St. Louis and meeting people from all walks of life. His experiences while he served there and the wonderful people he met and interacted with added to the fabric of his life. To his great joy, he matched his dream location and field of study for residency at the Mayo Clinic. He made more wonderful friends and learned the highest degree of excellence from his mentors – the “Mayo Way.” This embodied a professional, hardworking, yet compassionate patient-centered approach to medicine. This was a perfect fit for Dave’s natural personality. He was thrilled when he was able to continue his training at the Mayo Clinic for a GI/Liver fellowship.
Dave married the love of his life, Teri Cordova, on August 14, 1998. Together they have four beautiful children: Rachelle, Hayden, Madison and Brendan. He was a wonderful husband and father and will always be remembered for his altruistic, kind, and gentle manner. Dave and Teri were truly best friends. He would call her during his workday just to connect. They loved to be together. Dave was always willing to help the kids with their projects, sports, and various activities. He was a true partner, always seeking to lighten the load and make others happy.
Dave was a Board-Certified Pathologist for Pathology Associates where he was the Lab Medical Director for Clovis Community Medical Center and Community Cancer Institute. He was loved and respected for his professional knowledge, integrity, and attention to detail. He genuinely cared for each person. Dave would be the first person to ask your name, how you are doing, and if he could do anything for you, regardless of who you were. He truly was one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. He enjoyed spending time with his family, traveling, and was an avid Giants fan. He was also actively involved and enjoyed giving service through his local congregation at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Dave’s family wants to express their appreciation to the many, many people along this journey that have blessed and supported Dave and them in any way. A special thanks to the many medical professionals who gave such amazing care to Dave.
Dave is survived by his wife, Teri; their four children; his parents; five brothers and four sisters, many nieces and nephews and extended family.
