Angel was born on Nov 1, 1930 in Freeport, Texas to Augustina and Julian Gutierrez. Angel was the youngest of their six children. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Anastasia Rosales and Dominga Fleming and his brothers Clemente Gutierrez, Mario Gutierrez, and Ambrosio Gutierrez. He loved his family dearly. Up until the last few years, Angel lived on the family property and saw the City of Freeport change over the years. He loved Freeport. The best part of his day was watching the ships come into the port from his front doorstep.
Angel graduated from Brazosport High School in 1951. After high school, he started work as a surveyor. From there, he worked as a Civil Engineer at the Navigation District known as the ‘Port of Freeport’ for 45 years. When he first took the job with the Navigation District to build the port, the area was filled with nothing but grass and rattlesnakes. He loved his time working at the Port of Freeport. He shared countless stories of his time working there with family, friends, and sometimes, even strangers.
Strangers weren’t strangers for long. Angel had a wonderful ability to talk to anyone. He could relate to anyone and his stories engaged and entertained people. After his retirement, Angel didn’t sit still. He was a man of the town with his daily errands and stops to visit friends. He kept busy tending to his yard and his family of cats. ‘Tio Angel’ cared deeply for his nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews – he treated them as if they were his own. His other loves besides his family were his cats, the Houston Texans, reading the news, and eating shrimp and oysters.
Angel enjoyed every day of his 93 years. His family and friends got to share many of those days with him. His bright light, love, and laughter will be missed by his family. We love you, Tio Angel.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 31st from 11:00 A.M.-1:00 P.M. at Restwood Funeral Home in Clute, Texas. The Funeral service will begin at 1:00 P.M. followed by a graveside service directly after in Restwood Memorial Park.
