Your father was an example to follow both as a teacher and a church leader. Our parents were friends over the years and  your dad was my first math teacher when I moved to Mission.  He taught me the value of "Sir" and "Ma'am" as that had not been a part of my culture previous to that move. Prayers as you grieve and celebrate his life.  Wish I could be with you tomorrow.

Mary Nell and Tommy,

Your mom and dad were certainly pillars of the community, very good friends to my mom and dad, Pete and Helen Dick, and definitely your dad was a wonderful role model for me. It makes me smile though to think of the reunions that have occurred as your dad has joined your mom and so many of his dear friends who have gone on before him. My prayers are with you as you move through this period of sadness filled with bittersweet memories. 'God bless.

Dear Mary Nell and Tommy and your family,
   I shed a tear with you on hearing about your father's passing.   I can't help but smile, too because of all the wonderful memories I hold dear,  of living across that famous Bryce Drive from you.  I can vividly remember so many times at your house with your sweet parents.
   I wholeheartedly attribute my Math brain and love of all math to your father.
I loved being in his classes and took all the Math I could,  having him as my favorite and best teacher ever, 3 out of 4 years.
   I have always told my children and now tell my grandchildren to be good in Math, you need to have a teacher like Mr. Smith.
   May God, as only He can do, bring you comfort and peace during this difficult time.

  I was sad to hear the news of your father's passing.  I have so many wonderful memories of times at your home, when we were growing up.  I know that your parents are together again and loving their reunion.  He was a great influence to so many, at MHS, the Presbyterian Church and everywhere he went.  Mission was lucky to have so many wonderful teachers and great, everyday men and your dad was one them.  May you find comfort during this hard time.

Mr Jim Smith, Great man, great teacher and educator, great friend. I was lucky to work with Jim at Mission High school in 1980's when Gus Zapata was principal, and Helen Ibbotson was asst principal. I served in various teaching and administrative roles during that time. .I always enjoyed Jim's dry wit, jokes, and seeing him teach in his golf clothes ...we knew where he was going right after school... He positively impacted many lives during his lifetime...He fulfilled his purpose...my condolences to his family.

We shared a lot of good times chasing the elusive white wing dove as well as chasing the equally elusive golf ball.  RIP Jim!
