

Lake Jackson Pioneer, Edith Catherine Schoppe passed away peacefully at the Oak Village Healthcare facility in Lake Jackson on November 1, 2012. Catherine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on September 28, 1916. She was blessed with 96 years. In the 1920’s her parents Gus and Edith Romer moved to the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas bringing Catherine, her twin sister Anna Mae (Raders), and her four brothers: Gus Jr., James, Paul and Louis Romer. There she met the love of her life, Ivo Schoppe who was a high school football coach, at a church “box lunch” social. They were soon married and had their first son I. Richard Jr. They moved to Lake Jackson after Ivo accepted a wartime job at the Dow Chemical Company. Her second son Dwaine was born in Dow Hospital in Freeport. In the early years of Lake Jackson, she was a member of Saint Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Freeport and volunteered in the catholic school cafeteria for many years. She was an active member of the Altar Society and Legion of Mary prayer group. Later, she became an active member of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Lake Jackson. Her greatest passion was her volunteer work as a Hospital Auxiliary Member (and past president) at The Dow Hospital, The Brazosport Community Hospital and Brazosport Regional Hospital systems. In 2008 she was credited with 45 years of Auxiliary Service. In 2011, she resigned after earning over 14,000 hours of service awards. Ivo, her parents, brothers, sister and son Richard, precedes her in death. She is survived by, daughter in law Nancy Schoppe, son Dwaine (Elizabeth) Schoppe, four grandchildren Dean (Joan) Schoppe, Justine (Will) Larremore, Tim Schoppe (Michelle) and Kirk (Carrie-Anne) Schoppe, and 8 great-grandchildren, Shelly, Austin, Troy, Aaron, Abigail, Simon, Benjamin and Ashley Schoppe. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staffs of Plantation Healthcare, Oak Village Healthcare and A-Med Hospice service providers for their genuine loving care. The family will receive friends at the Restwood Funeral Home, 1038 West Plantation Drive, Clute, TX 77531 from 5:30 pm until 8:00 pm with a Rosary conducted by Rev. Marty Pham at 7:00 pm on Monday Nov. 5, 2012. The funeral mass will be conducted by Monsignor Leo Wleczyk at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church at 100 Oak Drive South, Lake Jackson, TX 77566 at 10:30 am Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012. Burial will follow in the Restwood Memorial Park with Timothy Schoppe, Kirk Schoppe, Dean Schoppe, Austin Schoppe, Lou Romer and Jon Romer serving as pallbearers.
