on January 6, 2022. On her 21st birthday she married her highschool sweetheart and celebrated 70 wonderful years of
marriage. Karl has been gone for a little over 2 years and she missed him everyday.
With her teaching degree, from the University of Houston, she spent 27 years in O.M. Roberts. To this day many of
those third grade students fondly remember the candy jar on her desk and memorizing many poems. She also taught 5
year old Sunday School at First Baptist Lake Jackson.
Elaine had a deep desire to call on shut-ins. She visited nursing homes, assisted living facilities and private homes to
share her testimony and uplifting written materials. She was also a very dedicated driver for Home Delivered Meals.
Other community involvements included membership and offices held in Eta Omega Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma,
Symphony League, Community Concert, Little Theater, Riverside Country Club, and Retired Teachers Association.
She shared a love of deer hunting with Karl and had the larger of the mounts in their home. She enjoyed planting
bulbs, watching the birds in the backyard, playing bridge and sewing.
Elaine is survived by her daughters, Susan Whitby Oelfke and Melinda Oelfke. Grandsons John Michael Whitby
(Kacey) and Karl David Whitby (Crystal). Great Grandchildren: Madison, Mary Elizabeth, Will, Thomas Henry and John
David.
Brother: John Douglass Steed (Janelle) and many nieces and nephews.
A special thank you to the management and staff of Elmcroft (Sodalis) Lake Jackson, and A-Med Hospice team.
Understanding these uncertain times, please celebrate the life of Elaine in your own way. A private family service will be
held.
