Georgia was born on December 11, 1934, in Tampico, Mexico, to parents Martin Gould Hubbard and Eleanor Werckle Hubbard. Her dad worked for Standard Oil Company, and following his accidental death, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas. Her family eventually settled in New Braunfels, where she enjoyed making many memories with family and friends along the Guadalupe River. It is also where she learned to drive and received her hardship license at age 12… she was on the go from that moment on!
Along the shores of Lake McQueeney is where she caught the eye of our Dad, Leo Crosley, an Aggie Corps Cadet, and they were married on August 27, 1950. After Leo graduated from Texas A&M in January 1951, they moved to Freeport, where he took a job with Dow Chemical. They relocated to Lake Jackson in April 1951. After the birth of their first child, Randy, in May 1951, Dad was called into service for the Korean War, and Mom soon followed, packing up the car with the new baby and her younger sister for a road trip from Lake Jackson to Fort Devens, Massachusetts. After two years in the Army, they returned to Lake Jackson as a family of four with their daughter, Patti. Life was good, and Lake Jackson was the perfect place to raise a family. Eventually, they were blessed with eight children, and life was very busy!
Faith was a very important part of Mom’s life. She was proud to be a founding member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Lake Jackson and was very involved in church activities, including RCIA ministry for over 20 years, serving on the Parish Council for two terms, teaching CCD for 6 years, being an Extraordinary Minister, and, of course, her favorite, being a greeter at the 8:00 am Mass.
Mom, in addition to raising, feeding, and keeping up with all her kids and their activities, found time to be involved in her community and the following activities: She was Past President of the Aggie Wives Club, Y-Wives Club, and Republican Women’s Club. She started a domino group in 1974 to help a neighbor who had a stroke. That domino group has met and played dominos every Wednesday for the past 50 years. She was a co-leader of The Compassionate Friends for 20 years, helping countless others as they went through the grieving process after losing a loved one. She learned to play tennis at age 40 and played for the next 40 years. She was a big football fan of the Houston Oilers and then the Texans, and, of course, a diehard Aggie.
But to her, her greatest achievement was being a wife, mother, and Grammy to many. She was a wife for 72+ years, and she and Dad did a great job of instilling strong family values in their kids. For her 20 grandchildren, there were countless “Grammy Camps”, “Grammy Days”, and hours and hours of “Grammy Tapes”, recording books on cassette tape personalizing them for each grandchild. Mom was gifted at writing letters and cards... and if you ever received an envelope from her stamped “Flattened Hug Inside,” you know what we mean. Mom also typed a weekly “newsletter” every Thursday from 1978-1999 to keep all of us kids and extended family informed on various family happenings. The newsletter was complete with pictures shared from the family and a riddle or trivia question. She continued these newsletters via email through 2022, and we are grateful for all of those memories.
Above all, we were all proud to call her OUR Mom/Grammy, and we will miss her humor, stories, antics, and especially her laughter, smile, and hugs.
Georgia is survived by her children Chuck (Anita) Crosley, Teresa (Mark) Gannaway, John (Kelly) Crosley, Tom (Karen) Crosley, daughter-in-law Peggy Crosley, son-in-law Jeff Heinrichs, 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Leo Crosley and her children, Mark, Claire, Randy, and Patti.
