Lourdes was born in Havana, Cuba on October 6, 1928 and was the eldest of two children of Maria Luisa and Ignacio Cirilo Perez-Diaz, a brilliant scholar. She is preceded in death by her husband, Eduardo J. Garcia-Meitin, her parents, and her sister, Maria Luisa.
She is survived by her children Mary Wilkins (Randy), Tonia Jones (J.K.), Eddy Garcia-Meitin (Cindy) and Rosie Meitin (Martin Schmidt); eight grandchildren, Jennifer Williams (Jon), Bonnie and Emily Garcia-Meitin, Cyril Jones (Lindsay), McLean and A.J. Jones, Kate Wilkins and Abigail Schmidt; and two great granddaughters, McKenzie Grace Jones and Emma Rose Williams.
Lourdes graduated from the University of Havana with a PhD in Mathematics and Physics and was a high school professor until the family fled Cuba in 1960. In 1965 she married Eduardo J. Garcia-Meitin, following the death of her sister. Lourdes provided a loving and stable presence to her family and selflessly devoted her life to their care. She instilled the value of hard work, education and financial responsibility in her children. Her passion for mathematics continued throughout her life by tutoring her children and helping others with taxes and finances as a part-time tax advisor. Lourdes enjoyed traveling throughout Europe with her husband and was also an avid reader. She would never miss an opportunity to discuss the latest financial news or world events with family and friends. Lourdes was also a self taught, accomplished chef of Cuban cuisine and enjoyed playing strategic board games with her children and grandchildren. Her intelligence and memory never abandoned her.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Lourdes devoted and compassionate care takers, Estela Ortega and Ellen Hill. Their diligent care and nurturing allowed her to live independently in her home after Eduardo’s passing in 2014. The family would also like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Raj Dalal and Nurse Carol Small, of IPH Hospice. Nurse Carol provided loving, compassionate care for Mom and support to the family. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Saint Vincent DePaul Society and Saint Michaels Catholic Church in Lake Jackson at 100 Oak Dr. S., Lake Jackson, TX, 77566.
