Marcia Lynne Flournoy, age 68, of Lake Jackson, TX passed away from dementia on Tuesday, August 29, 2023. She was born to parents, Clark and Margaret Flournoy, now deceased. This couple partnered together, raising their special-needs child by committing to a life of giving: loving care, attention and sacrifice. Marcia learned to love others, modeling her parents’ example. The Flournoys bustled with activities, shuffling their four kids. We all locked arms, hopped on life’s roller coaster and embraced life’s ups and downs, together. Our parents never experienced the luxury of empty nesting. Yet, they never complained. Instead, they soldiered on and tackled the challenges, helping Marcia live a healthy, quality life.
Marcia exuded spunk and spark, despite her developmental and intellectual disabilities. Those challenges never impaired her feisty spirit or zest for living. Our sister enjoyed dressing up; the more ostentatious, the better. A gal can’t have too much bling! Marcia liked to attract notice. Our girl was happy and spontaneous. Her laugh was contagious. For example, at church one morning, Marcia reverently walked forward to take communion. Suddenly, she spotted a friend sitting nearby in a pew. On impulse with exuberance, Marcia announced, “I’m going to Jamaica to a wedding!” The kind folks sitting close by tried to muffle their snickers. Marcia was a free spirit and she had no filter!
Our sister was fortunate. Our parents invested their time and energies in their four children. They patiently worked with Marcia to master difficult growth milestones despite her struggles. Marcia’s vulnerabilities taught her sister and brothers to value the worth of every person despite their weaknesses or imperfections. This life lesson and many others, inspired us. We thank our family roots for shaping positive values.
Regular education classes were a struggle for our sister. Eventually, Marcia transferred to the BISD school for special education students. There, she thrived. Instruction was targeted to her learning level and delivered at a slower pace. After graduation, our sister learned vocational skills while attending The Brazoria County Center For The Retarded. At the end of each training day, Marcia helped our mom in her classroom where mother taught math at Lake Jackson Intermediate School. This “after school gig” was Marcia’s little piece of heaven! She ran errands for mom and other teachers. She was free to flit around, chatting up the faculty. Everyone had a Marcia story to tell!
Eventually, Marcia joined Forgotten Angels, Inc., a home-community based program in Pearland, offering services to people with developmental disabilities. For 17 years our sister flourished in this supportive setting, enjoying a fulfilling and active adult life, balanced with work and play, expanding her circle of friends and caregivers.
Marcia was well loved and cared for by many. Her spark and spunk will be widely missed. May she always be warmly remembered as heaven’s very special child.
