Ola Mae was born on August 17, 1927 at Joshua, Texas. She graduated from Carlisle High School. She received an associate degree from Brazosport College in 1979.
Ola Mae married Billy Joe Sanders on June 9, 1950. Together, they celebrated their seventy-fourth anniversary in June, 2024. This coming June would have marked seventy-five years.
As a young woman, Ola Mae worked as a secretary for Dow Chemical. When her children were born, she left the workplace to raise her family. When her youngest entered college, she returned to work for Dow, running cost control on capital projects, retiring in 1989.
She loved being a Mom to her two boys and "Mamaw or Grandma" to the grandchildren and great grandchildren. She enjoyed her sewing room and has pieced and hand-quilted more quilts than we can count. She crocheted numerous afghans over the years, and even during her time at Silsbee Oaks, she crocheted hundreds of little caps that were donated to hospitals for the benefit of premie babies. She exhibited her love for God by investing herself in the loving care and support of others. Ola Mae was active in Sunday School teaching and leadership for decades, and even wrote Sunday School literature for a few years for Word Aflame, the publishing division of the United Pentecostal Church. In recent years, she was active in worship and in serving God at The Apostolic Church, Beaumont, Texas, so long as she was able, then enjoyed watching services remotely on her tablet when her health prevented physical attendance. She read her Bible completely through each year for twelve consecutive years.
Ola Mae is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lillian Bundy, and her sister, Millicent Bohannon.
Ola Mae is survived by her husband, Billy Joe Sanders of Lumberton, Texas; her son, Steve Sanders (wife, Lucia) of Richwood, Texas; her son, Rick Sanders (wife, Elizabeth) of Lumberton, Texas, six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; brother, Rev. Thomas E. Bundy, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
The Sanders family wishes to thank the caregivers at Silsbee Oaks Health Care, Silsbee, Texas, for their excellent care these last seven years.
