Ray was born on September 20th, 1928 to Pauline Durham and Victor Calderman in Los Angeles, California.
After Highschool, Ray moved to Port Angeles, Washington to work on Foss tugboats. After an incident in which the tug he worked on was sunk, he decided to join the military, deeming it safer. Joining the army near the end of World War II, he volunteered for the “new” Air Force, where he was promised better food than the Army. Proudly serving for over 20 years, including wartime service in Korea and Vietnam, and afterwards retiring with full honors in 1966 as a Master Sergeant. After leaving the Air Force, he joined the aircraft industry, working as an inspector for over 20 years, and retiring from Northrop in 1993.
During retirement, Ray went on to enjoy time with family, friends, and especially playing the dice game “Farkle”, as well as joining his local VFW Post, where he spent much of his time visiting and entertaining injured war veterans at his local VA hospital in Long Beach, California.
In 2016, Ray relocated to Texas, where he enjoyed his daily lawn care, dining out, playing Bingo, tinkering with his tools, and enjoying old westerns.
During the span of his full life, he was married twice. His first marriage was to Mariam Romine, and went on to have two children, both sons, Michael and Steven. His second marriage was to Marjorie Blair in 1966, and went on to have one more child, a daughter, Michele.
Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Marjorie; and his older brother Victor.
