
Bob graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas and attended Texas A&M in 1942 and SLI in Lafayette, Louisiana. He enlisted in the Marine Corp during WWII and attended officer training school. After WWII, he attended Southwest Texas Teacher’s College in San Marcos and obtained his B.S. and Masters Degree in Education. He ran track for the SWT Bobcats and held a high jump record for 10 years. He was also a record setter on a sprint medley relay team. Bob was inducted into the Hall of Fame at Texas State University (SWT) in 2009.
While attending SWT, he met and married his wife of 63 years, Betty McNeil Hackney. Upon graduation, Bob and Betty began teaching school in Lake Jackson, Texas. Within his career of 36 years with Brazosport ISD, he was a teacher, coach and bus driver. During the Korean War, he was called back to active duty and was wounded while at the Chosin Reservoir. This resulted in him being one of the Chosin Few and receiving the Purple Heart. Bob achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. After the Korean War, he returned to Brazosport ISD. Upon retirement, Bob and Betty moved to Lake Somerville for 20 years and then returned to Lake Jackson in 2004.
Bob was active in the Lake Jackson and Lake Somerville communities as city councilman, Loan Committee member of 1st National Bank, Sunday School teacher, member of the American Legion and commander of Caldwell VFW. Bob was also well known as a swimming instructor.
Bob is survived by his sons Greg of Surfside and Gary (RuthAnn) of Victoria; grandsons Carl and Clint Hackney of Colorado. Bob is preceded in death by his parents, and wife, Betty Hackney.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations be made to Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, 2002 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, Texas 77030 or any other Veteran’s related organization.
Memorial service will be at 9:30 am Friday, December 28, 2012 in the Restwood Funeral Home Chapel.
