Santos Diaz Rangel

Santos was born to Santos Sr. and Fela Rangel (Diaz) on October 27, 1932, in New Gulf, TX. He was formerly married to Leonides Arevalo (Rangel) and had four children: Frank, Patricia, Shirley, and John.

Santos was hired by the Port of Freeport when it opened in 1950. He hired the first port employees including his father Santos Sr. Later he worked for Canadian Gulf Line, Ltd. in Houston and went on to form his own insurance business.

Santos was a very intelligent man and fortunately passed this on to his son Frank. The rest of his children were not as fortunate. His good looks: not so much!

Santos was a sports fan and in the 1960’s managed the Freeport Falcons Hispanic league baseball team. The team played other cities in Texas. We remember many Sunday mornings driving through Freeport’s East End (the barrio) rousting his players out of bed to play ball. There were some games when Santos became a manager / player to fill out the roster.

Santos recently received his AA 38-year sober award. He created a Spanish language of the AA program and established a Spanish AA program in Angleton. He was very involved with counseling and nurturing people with addiction problems. Many of these people will fondly remember Santos as a caring and loyal friend.

Santos is preceded in death by his parents Santos Sr. and Fela Rangel, his ex-wife Leonides Arevalo, his daughter Patricia Rangel, his sister Mandy Randolph, and his brother Robert Rangel.

He is survived by his son, Frank Rangel and spouse Janet; his daughter, Shirley Rangel and spouse Gerry; his son John Rangel and spouse Kim; his brother, Richard Rangel, sisters Josephina (Peppa) Kouches, Rebecca Berlanga, Rachel Juarez and Helen Romero; eight grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and other extended family and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are grandchildren Matthew Rangel, Brian Rangel, Kyle Rangel, John Rangel Jr., Noah Rangel, Jessica Rangel and Luther Murphy & Arnie Royall.

Grandchildren Tabitha Rangel and Angelica Villarreal will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

A visitation for Santos will be held Monday, December 18, 2023 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Restwood Funeral Home, 1038 West Plantation Dr., Clute, TX 77531. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, December 19, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, 1038 West Plantation Dr., Clute, TX 77531. A graveside service will occur Tuesday, December 19, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Restwood Memorial Park, 1038 West Plantation Dr., Clute, Texas 77531.
