Son of Ray and Elizabeth Oda Belle (Yount) Black; brother of Ray (Mary) and Boyd (Cheryl); .
He married Mary Turner in 1963, and they had two children: Susan (Clark) and Shannon (Jean)
and, eventually, a grandson: Benjamin (Abigail).
Ken, also known as Sandy, K. O., or Blackie, loved Jesus and strived to serve and honor Him
through service to others so that they may know His love. Ken enlisted in the United States
Navy and mastered working on helicopters, sonar systems, airplanes, and much more for over
20 years. He retired from the Navy and went to work at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) as a
Quality Control Inspector for the NASA Shuttle program, lastly with the United Space Alliance.
After almost 20 years at KSC, he retired for a second time. Throughout both careers, he
faithfully served his wife, family, church, and friends. A hard-working, by the Bible, servant hearted
man, he will be greatly missed.
Ken is survived by his daughter, Susan (Black) Highsmith (Clark); son, Shannon Black (Jean);
grandson, Benjamin Highsmith (Abigail); brother, Boyd Cecil Black (Cheryl); and aunt, Virginia
“Gin” (Black) Carter; several nieces and nephews; his church family at Gateway Community
church; and many other friends and neighbors.
A 4:00 p.m. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25th, 2025, at Gateway
Community Church, with Pastor Clay Stevens officiating and with a time of visitation beginning
at 3:30 p.m.until time of service. A private interment will later occur at Brevard Memorial Park in
Sharpes (Cocoa), Florida. Memorials, in lieu of flowers, are requested to Gateway Community
Church, 2801 Tropic St., Titusville, Fl 32796.
