Gwendolyn Elaine White Hillmon was born on October 23, 1956, in Montgomery, Alabama, to the late Herbert Lewis White and Catherine Elizabeth White. She peacefully departed this life and received her wings on January 23, 2026.
Gwendolyn was affectionately known as “Kitty Kat #7” by her family, as she was the seventh of ten children. She was lovingly called “Mrs. Gwen” by friends and all who had the pleasure of
knowing her.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age and joined William Chapel AME Church, where she sang in the youth choir and often led solos in praise to God. Gwen’s love for singing continued into adulthood at Welcome Grove Baptist Church, where she served as Acting Choir Director and remained a faithful and devoted member. Her presence will be deeply missed. She also cherished weekly prayer fellowship with the Welcome Grove Women’s Ministry and maintained close spiritual connections with the women of her former church, Pinetree Park Baptist Church.
Gwen received her high school diploma from Jefferson Davis High School in 1975 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from Auburn University at Montgomery in 1979.
Following graduation, she relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where she enjoyed a successful career in the banking industry for more than 20 years, receiving numerous awards for achievement. She later devoted over 20 years as a substitute teacher in the Clayton County Public School System. Being with children and working alongside caring educators brought her great joy and fulfillment. She will truly be remembered and cherished.
Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Daniel Ervin White, and her sister Wanda Jynell White.
Gwen was a loving and devoted wife and mother. Her beautiful memories will forever be treasured by her husband of 25 years, Ulysees Hillmon Jr., who affectionately called her “Baby,” a name she dearly loved; her beloved son, Jamal Y. Adofo of Birmingham, Alabama; two loving stepsons, Alexander (Amanda) Hillmon and Brandon D. Hillmon of Atlanta, Georgia; one loving stepdaughter, Makayla (Rickey) Hillmon-Stevens of Atlanta, Georgia; and seven
grandchildren: Austin, Aubrey, Aiden, Adalyn, Genesis, Morgan, and Silas.
She also leaves to cherish her memory two brothers, Darryl (Yvette) White of Birmingham, Alabama and Dennis (Gloria) White of Dallas, Texas; five sisters, Gloria White Williams of Montgomery, Alabama; Deborah White of Atlanta, Georgia; Cynthia Jackson of Montgomery, Alabama; Regina Hardy of Atlanta, Georgia; and Shirley (Christopher) White Dukes of Atlanta, Georgia; three god-sisters, Arhondus “Lulu” Simmons, Danita Johnson, and Sharon Beasley; along with a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
