Una Joy Richards was born on March 28, 1956 in Kingston Jamaica to the late Maudlin and Arthur Richards. In1971, at age 15, Una migrated to the United States and after some time obtained her citizenship. She then sent for her mother to receive the same.
Una truly embraced the opportunities presented to her. She attended New York University where she received an Associate degree in Business and a Bachelor’s in Psychology. She later obtained her Master’s degree in Service Management from Mercer University. Una was a member of multiple professional organizations including Georgia Association of Health Executives (GAHE) & American Society for Quality (ASQ).
Una was also very creative like her mother. When Una did something, she fully immersed herself and did it well! She started a business creating elaborate gift baskets and balloon decorations, in 2005 she was awarded the Queen of Sales as a Mary Kay consultant, and she was an accomplished author with a book titled, “Pull the Darn Trigger”. It’s important to note, she did all of this while working a full-time job as a manager at Grady Memorial Hospital, then a regional manager at Kaiser Permanente in the Central Sterile Supply Departments. She was also a member of the Clayton County Chamber of Commerce & president of Toastmasters. As Sophia would describe her mom; Una was a “BADASS”!
She loved tennis and was an avid competitive player as evidenced by the numerous trophies on her mantel. Una’s faith in the Lord was strong and unwavering. Renowned and respected in her career and in her personal life, she believed in “respect given; respect earned.” She always fought for her family no matter the situation, but taught them that all actions do have consequences.
Una lived life to the fullest; her love, joy and presence will be missed by; her son Jason John, daughter Sophia Richards, sister Murlene Mason, brother Donovan Richards, 2 granddaughters, Symoria and Avery, several nieces & nephews, a large extended family, and many good friends. Una’s life exemplified that the Lord was her light, salvation, and the strength of her life, it was in him she trusted without fear!!!
