
Charles was born in Dothan, Alabama, on March 18, 1947, to James Edward Lamb and Alice Davey Calhoun Lamb. He was an only child. He graduated with Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Physics from Frostburg State College in Frostburg, Maryland, in 1969. He completed his Master’s and Doctor of Education in Mathematics Education degrees at the University of Georgia.
In 1973, Jennie Lynne, was born to Charlie and his first wife, Catherine Bernice Jones Lamb. In 1975, Charlie moved with his family to Austin, Texas, where he was an assistant and associate professor of Mathematics Education at The University of Texas at Austin. On July 25, 1987, Charles married Fran Cobb of Austin, Texas, and became stepfather to Chanel DeAnn Cobb, also of Austin. Charlie and Fran moved to College Station, Texas, in 1994, where he completed his career as a professor of Mathematics Education at Texas A&M University. He taught many undergraduate courses and supervised countless graduate students during his academic career. He was named a Professor Emeritus in 2000.
Using the name "Charlie Edwards," he hosted a show on Friday nights on KAMU-FM, 90.9 (the public radio station operated by Texas A&M University). Brazos Valley Gold showcased predominantly country, gospel, blues, and occasionally rock and pop music. His wife, “Miss Dixie,” joined him as a regular co-host.
In 2003, Charlie and Fran moved to Calvert, Texas, where they operated Miss Dixie's Lodge, a bed and breakfast. For a short time, they also co-owned The Calvert Moment newspaper. They were members of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. During his time in Calvert, Charles became a Lay Speaker and volunteered extensively in the community.
Charlie was an avid golfer and often combined that love with his strong charitable nature by playing in many charity tournaments. During his 15 years in Bryan-College Station and Calvert, he was active in many civic organizations, including the local chapter of the American Heart Association, the Prenatal Clinic of the Brazos Valley, the Dispute Resolution Center, and the Rotary Club of Aggieland.
Charles and Fran moved back to College Station in 2010, where they were members of First United Methodist Church in College Station.
Charles is survived by his wife of 24 years, Fran Lamb of College Station, his daughter, Jennie Lynne Lamb, of College Station, his stepdaughter Chanel DeAnn Cobb, of San Diego, California, and his cousin, Sandra Peters, and her family, of Dothan, Alabama. He is also survived by other extended family members and a host of friends and golf buddies.
The family will receive visitors at Memorial Funeral Chapel of College Station, 2901 Texas Avenue South, College Station, Texas 77845, on Sunday, August 7, 2011, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at the same location on Monday, August 8, 2011 at 10:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the "Dr. Charles E. Lamb Memorial Scholarship Fund" at First Victoria National Bank, 1004 Copperfield Parkway, College Station, TX, 77845.
