Jerome Harris Jr.

10 juillet 193613 septembre 2020

Jerome (“Jerry”) Dee Harris, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2020, at the home of his youngest daughter in Iola, Texas.

Jerry was born on July 10, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, to Jerome and Barbara Harris. He grew up enjoying time with family and friends, and participated in multiple sports. This included a special love for baseball and – beginning in his professional career – a passion for the game of golf. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jerry attended and graduated from Texas A&M University (then Texas A&M College), where he proudly served in the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Following graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1958, Jerry served in the U.S. Army Reserves and was honorably discharged. In that same year, he married Betty Ann Hollers (also from San Antonio, Texas) and subsequently had three children.

Jerry enjoyed a successful engineering career that spanned more than 60 years. He prided himself on being a consummate professional that was respected by both his fellow colleagues and clients, and frequently served as a trusted advisor and mentor to team members and friends over the years. Outside of his professional life, Jerry was a devoted husband and father that enjoyed spending time with his family, including coaching his children’s many sports teams. Guiding all of his efforts was a devout Christian faith that drove Jerry’s enthusiastic involvement in local church activities and willingness to help those in need as evidenced by his strong financial support of numerous charities and social organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife Betty who passed away in 2004 after 46 years of marriage, and is survived by his sister, Barbara Ann Shepard. Jerry is also survived by his three children – Kathy Milthorpe, Leslie Lundquist and Wes Harris – and their respective spouses – Mike Milthorpe, Jeff Lundquist and Brenda Harris. Finally, he was a beloved grandfather (“Papoo”) that will be greatly missed by Hannah Milthorpe (including fiancé, Ryan Roseboom), Lauren Lundquist, Justin Lundquist (including wife, Callie), Mitch Lundquist, Chloe Milthorpe, Peyton Harris and Kiersten Harris. Finally, the Harris family appreciates the kind and loving care provided by Texas Home Health Group of College Station, Texas, during Jerry’s final week of his life.

Given the health challenges posed by the global COVID-19 pandemic, a formal celebration of life for Jerry will be postponed until conditions warrant for a safe in-person group event. The Harris family looks forward to providing additional information as to the details for the celebration when appropriate. In lieu of flowers, the Harris family would appreciate any donations be made in Jerry’s name to the charity of the donor’s choice.

Jerry was a great friend for 20 years, we hunted and played a lot of golf together. We played golf in Colombia during a project review trip as guests of the client at their country club, but had no clubs or shoes, and as usual for Colombians “ No Problem, we’ll get you rental equipment and shoes . The only problem was Jerry’s size 13 feet could not be fitted, so Jerry walked 18 holes in his cowboy boots . That was typical of Jerry to not let little things stand in the way of participating. He was like big brother to me over the years and I greatly appreciated his friendship.

It’s taken me a while to be able to talk about my love and friendship with Jerry Harris. We learned to paint on canvas and sing in the choir at the Parc. We found so much in common that we attended most of the multiple activities together with others who shared in laughing at Jerry‘s humor. He also introduced Me to his church family and made me welcome.

When I experienced a serious illness requiring multiple hospital stays, Jerry was a constant source of emotional, spiritual, and physical help and love that brought me through the hospital when my kids were not always able to be present. Jerry‘s daily contact over the phone
reminded me that I was not alone and had a loving group of friends that were like family to me from the Parc. He also introduced me to his family and the precious relationships that he shared with them. This also brought me much joy and was a source of healing with all that I have experienced over the last several months.
Jerry and I grew to love each other very much during what seems to most to be a short amount of time - but in the year that we were together
-our lives intersected and we seem to share a lifetime of memories reflecting on both of our past raising children , experiences enjoyed from our professional lives, and celebrating milestones in both of our children’s lives.
Jerry’s limitless energy, enthusiasm for life and people, wonderful sense of humor, and loving heart for others, myself, and my beloved cats Dimitri and Bo – made beautiful memories and gave me opportunities that I would likely not have experienced during my stay at the Parc- had we not been given such a beautiful friendship and love.
Gods time and gifts are always good and perfect – even when we’re not ready to receive them. Jerry will be missed and remembered always – with much love, gratitude, and many laughs while reflecting with friends and family on the wonderful man that Jerry Harris was while with us, and is now in our eternal home.

Jerry was such a wonderful soul and will be greatly missed. He was definitely one of a kind and always had a positive outlook on life no matter what his struggles or ailments were. He made me more conscious about my own outlook on life and how I view things and, for that, I'll be forever grateful. Heaven not only gained an angel, but a great stand-up comedian as well! He'd make me laugh so hard, my cheeks literally hurt.

My deepest condolences go out to his dear family and friends. May the memories you hold dear bring you all comfort in the days ahead.

Keep em smiling Jerry! We love and miss you so much!

I will always remember Jerry ‘s smile, warmth, and quick sense of humor. His kindness and being able to reach out and help whoever needed something and making time to be physically present for my mom in every situation that she experienced will always be something I treasure, value and remember. If cats could talk – I know that Lily and Dimitri would also share they are great love and grief over his compassionate care and dedication to provide for their needs during all of mom’s hospital stays. I am grateful for the short time that I was able to talk with and come to know Jerry and I am so grateful for his friendship with my mom. They shared a special love and relationship and that leaves a legacy all of its own. Our prayers And thoughts will be with you and your family and we pray that God‘s grace, hope, peace, and strength will continue to bless you and enable you to focus on the joy and thanksgiving whenever you remember Jerry. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us and let us help in anyway possible during the days and months and know how much we will be lifting you up in prayer with Thanksgiving for Jerry and your family. With much love, Amy Castillo and family
