On May 15th, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away at the age of 82 years old. John was born in Marfa, Texas to Thelma and George, but spent most of his life in El Paso, Texas where he grew up with his two brothers, Ronnie and Gary. John married his first wife, Carol, and together they raised their three children, Sheryl, Debbi, and Steve. As a dad, John was known for being playful and fun-loving, while working hard to instill a sense of independence in his kids.
John worked for many years as a Little Debbie salesman, which often demanded long hours and early mornings (sometimes starting his day at 3 am). Thankfully, he had a strong work ethic, quick wit, and a knack for forming relationships, which served him well as a businessman. After he retired, his interest in refinishing old furniture led him to his second wife, LaDell, and they shared their passion for antiquing until she passed away.
As a man of faith, it’s no surprise that John fell for and married Pat, a spitfire that he met at church. They later moved to New Braunfels, Texas where they built a beautiful home, spent time with family, and became a force to be reckoned with in the game of forty-two.
When Pat passed away, John moved in with his daughter, Sheryl, and her husband, Paul. He spent his time swapping stories with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and quickly became a regular at the local senior center, where he met a dear companion, Dottie. John spent his last few years with Dottie and his family, dancing, breaking into song, and cracking jokes.
John was known for his love of fishing, watching football, and classic cars. He loved to laugh and placed great value on a good joke. He had an infectious smile and a rowdy sense of humor, making it easy for him to make friends everywhere he went. He will be greatly missed, and never forgotten.
John was predeceased by his parents, Thelma and George MacWhorter, younger brother Gary MacWhorter, second wife, LaDell MacWhorter, third wife, Patricia MacWhorter, and last companion Dorothy (Dottie) Hale. John leaves behind his older brother Ronald MacWhorter, first wife, Carol Mason, three children, Sheryl Burek, Debbi Shank, and Steven MacWhorter, grandchildren, Jason Madden, Jeanine Shank, Tony Madden, Jenina Roberts, Carly Jones, and Matthew Shank, and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service for John will be held Friday, June 9, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd., Colleyville, TX 76034.
