John was born on October 8, 1955, in Moultrie, Georgia, the son of John Alan and Betty Nyquist. He married Elizabeth Schmitt on July 18, 1987.
John began flying in 1973. He was a pilot for Piedmont/US Airways from 1987 until 2014. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and quick wit. His priorities were his family, friends, and his dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, children, John Philip and Taylor Nyquist. John Philip's fiancée Shasta Orr. Sisters Karen and Ellen Nyquist. Brother, Robert Nyquist, and wife Linda Nyquist, sister Laura and Craig Kiefer. Grandson John Lawson Kubas. Nieces Jordan, Holly, and Rachel Kiefer.
