Johnny Wayne "Coach" Lowe, of Bedford, Texas passed away on September 1, 2021, peacefully, in his home, with his family by his side. He will always be remembered as a loving father, grandfather, dedicated teacher and outstanding coach. He was born on January 10, 1942 to John William "Buster" Lowe and Hazel White Lowe in Rusk, Texas.
Johnny graduated from Kilgore High School in 1960 where he was a Texas High School Association’s Football All-Star. He was only one of two men ever chosen to both play and coach in that prestigious game. He was known as an outstanding athlete and was also State runner-up in diving. He was recruited to play football by the great Frank Broyles at the University of Arkansas where he began his college football career. He later played at Sam Houston State University, where he won the NAIA National Championship. In 1963, he married his high school sweetheart and love of his life Grace Thornbrugh, also of Kilgore, Texas. They were married for 54 years until her death in 2017.
Coach Lowe was the ultimate teacher and football coach in Texas. He was constantly studying to improve himself, both in the classroom and on the field. He was well-respected by his peers and beloved by his players and students. He was truly a leader of men. Throughout his time as a coach, he helped numerous athletes advance their dreams of pursuing sports at the collegiate level, including his own sons. He was also a great track coach, leading many athletes to the ultimate competition, The Texas State Track Meet. However the biggest impact he made was by his example and mentoring of young men to be the best men, husbands and fathers they could be. He retired in 2001 and enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved Gracie, visiting his East Texas lakehouse often, playing in their bridge club, fellowshipping with their Sunday School class from First Baptist Euless, and of course being actively involved in the lives of all of his children and grandchildren. He attended countless sporting events and recitals, always cheering and offering encouragement to those he loved most. It was what he did best.
Johnny is survived by his children, Jeff Lowe and wife Kellie of Bedford, Jason Lowe and wife Christina of Arlington, Julie Lunsford and husband Chad of Carrollton and grandchildren, Kennedy Roberts and husband Willie, Taylor Lunsford, Walker Lunsford, Hudson Lunsford, Mitchell Lunsford, Mallory Lowe, Charlotte Lowe, Kathleen Lowe, Hayden Martin, and great-granddaughter Josie Roberts.
Johnny is preceded in death by his wife, Gracie along with their parents. The family is at peace knowing that Johnny and Gracie are reunited in heaven because they put their faith and trust in Jesus Christ, though they are greatly missed.
