Joreata Virginia Bryson was born on May 26, 1931, in her hometown of Olney, TX. to Doran and Lois Swanzy. She later married her husband, William Douglas Bryson, on September 19, 1952, at Carswell Airforce Base in Fort Worth Texas where they remained in love for 62 years until the passing of William “Bill” Bryson on May 25, 2015.
During their marriage, they had 2 children, Cynthia Ann Smith, and Linda Kay Gentry. They lived most of their years in Fort Worth Texas where they raised their children as Joreata carried out a 40-year career in property management.
Joreata was a spicy little redhead who loved to sew, clipping coupons, and could never pass up a good slot machine. She loved visiting Las Vegas with her husband on a semi-regular basis where they cherished many memories of her winnings. She never lost in life, nor the slots.
One of our favorite memories of Joreata is that she could save money by clipping coupons. She once called and said that she went to Walgreens to buy makeup, and Walgreens ended up paying her $5.00 back for that makeup because she had mastered the coupon world that nobody else has been able to master themselves.
Then, of course, her family. She very much-loved receiving cards, phone calls, and visits from her loved ones. Every year for Christmas the whole family gathered at her home with stockings hung from the mantle and presents under the tree. She spent all month shopping trying to find the perfect gift for each individual person. She put a lot of thought into Christmas and loved to see the smiles on our faces as we opened our gifts, and as we ate her amazing chicken and dumplings. I remember when she had called me and said that she had bought a shirt for a family member for Christmas at Macy’s Department Store and had it wrapped and under the tree. A week later, she received a coupon in the mail for 25% off at Macy’s. So, she unwrapped the gift, returned the shirt, only to rebuy it to get the 25% off, and then realized that the shirt was now on sale for additional savings.
We will miss you Mama Jo dearly, but we are so grateful for the time we had to spend with you. We will always cherish the memories and forever feel your presence in our hearts.
Joreata Bryson is survived by her daughter, Cynthia “Cindy” Smith, and her grandchildren; Misty Ramirez, Jeff Harrison, Billy Smith, and Sunnie Taft. She was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren and 4 great–great-grandchildren.
