Kimberly Whitham Cowan of Colleyville, Texas was welcomed into Heaven by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 12, 2025, surrounded by family and friends after a courageous five year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Kim was born October 2, 1954, in Dallas to the late Judge Warren and Norma Whitham. She graduated from Hillcrest High School 1972 where she was a managing editor of the Hillcrest Hurricane and violinist in the orchestra. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown for two years prior to attending the University of North Texas in Denton, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism.
After graduation, Kim began working for the American Heart Association and was editor of their national magazine. While working at the AHA, Kim met her future husband, Larry, on a trip with friends during July 4th weekend 1977.
Kim continued her career in Tarrant County at Lanier Business Products. During this time, Kim and Larry married in Dallas on May 10, 1980. They made their first home in North Richland Hills. Kim then went on to work at the Western Company of North America followed by Burlington Northern Railroad.
Their daughter, Avery was born April 2, 1984, followed by their son, Taylor born March 23, 1987. Later that year, Kim and Larry purchased Glenview Professional Pharmacy fulfilling Larry’s lifelong dream of owning his own pharmacy.
Soon after, Kim left her career at BNR to partner with Larry in operating the pharmacy which they owned for 32 years. With this transition she gained the new title of CFO of the pharmacy, in addition to continuing her role as CEO of the Cowan household. In 1990, Kim and Larry moved to Colleyville where they have lived for 35 years.
Kim had a God given gift to serve others well. She did this in so many ways including teaching Sunday school classes, leading VBS, volunteering at Royal Family Kids’ Camp, hosting women’s bible studies in her home, and giving her time as a finance/budgeting coach at The Hills Church. Kim was also famous for her pecan pralines at Christmastime. She spent countless hours in the kitchen every year cooking hundreds of pralines because it was important to her that pharmacy customers, family and friends feel loved and appreciated by receiving a uniquely homemade special treat.
Kim was selfless. She always put others before herself both at home and in business. She supported her children in their school activities, church and sporting events, even staying up all night to finish projects the kids had procrastinated on until the last minute. It was important to her that employees at the pharmacy were not only treated with the utmost respect, but treated as she would want to be treated. Kim instilled in her children the importance of giving humbly to others without any expectation of thanks or recognition. She had a magical way of getting it all done for everyone all the time.
Kim was an avid reader as well as the family’s vacation planner with an itinerary for every trip. She loved traveling with friends all over the world, and would eagerly plan any trip, any time, for anyone. She was the unofficial travel agent for her family and friends.
Her kind heart, sweet smile, listening ear, and love for all who knew her will live on in our hearts forever.
Kim is survived by husband Larry Cowan of Colleyville; daughter Avery Cowan of North Richland Hills; son Taylor (Megan) of Hurst; grandsons Zane, Cooper, and Lawson Cowan; brother Wayne Whitham (Betty) of Benbrook; sister-in-law Dorothy Reeves of Fort Worth; and nephews Tate and Tanner Whitham.
Kim’s Celebration of Life service will be held on April 26, 2025 at 11 am at The Hills Church, 6300 NE Loop 820, North Richland Hills, Texas 76180.
