He leaves behind his wife of 66 years, Hildegard, his sister Linda Hedricks, his daughters Mary and Kimberly, son-in law Manfred and grandchildren Christina, Erika, and Alexander.
Mack was born in Lyles, Tennessee. He received a football scholarship to Vanderbilt University. He served in the United States Air Force for four years, stationed in Germany, a few miles from the former Iron Curtain. He met his German bride during this time, and recollection has it that a fellow soldier translated his proposal. He returned to the United States in 1958 with Hildegard and baby daughter Mary.
He attended the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He started working for IBM repairing typewriters. Upon graduation, he participated in the development of mainframe computers in the Sixties. During this time, he was blessed with another baby girl, Kim. His career at IBM took him and his family across the US and abroad, from Kentucky, Maryland, New York, Texas and to Oslo, Norway. During the last ten years of his career, he traveled the world, working on IBM international standards, and finally retired after 30+ years with the company.
After Macklin retired, he dedicated his time to nurturing his grandchildren. He was everybody's go-to guy if you needed a ride from the airport, help with your computer, help with your math homework, or help to settle an argument on why Blue Bell is the best ice cream; he was there.
His favorite song ever, is the Tennessee Waltz.
Macklin will be honored with a Celebration of his Life in November 2022.
