Ricky Dan Powell, of Colleyville, passed away on August 20th 2025 at the age of 64. He was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 18th 1960 to Wanda and William Powell. He was the youngest of 4 and the only boy. Having 3 older sisters influenced him to be thoughtful, kind, and have an eye for fashion. He loved his sisters dearly. His early years were immersed in sports and hunting. While at Coronado High School, he excelled as a pitcher and slugger in baseball. He attended Texas Tech University, where he joined the Saddle Tramps and earned a Business Administration degree, aiming for a career in medical sales. During his time working in vascular ultrasound, he met Sharon Nickleski in New Orleans in 1986; they married in Lemont, Illinois the following year. Rick built a successful career in medical sales and management with Sun Medical and spent his last 18 years at OEC (GE), where he gained many longtime friends and achieved notable success.
He often said he won the lottery with his children, Kathryn Rose and Jake. As a devoted father, he loved spending time with them—playing, reading, and sharing wisdom. His talent for imitating "King Louis" from Jungle Book and narrating "Hank the Cowdog" inspired in them a love for reading and animals, resulting in many pets joining the Powell family over the years.
His love for sports was also shared with Kathryn and Jake. He coached Kathryn’s softball team and Jake’s baseball team. Over several seasons, he coached Jake’s baseball team to win the Colleyville City Championship two times, creating lasting memories for the players. Although he was not raised as a swimmer, he became a vigorous supporter of both Kathryn and Jake’s swimming careers, spending countless hours on bleachers and capturing thousands of pictures and videos.
His belief that true success lies in striving for your best and uplifting others inspired both Kathryn and Jake, as well as their teammates, to approach sports with integrity and camaraderie. Having never participated in swimming, he was determined to participate with his family and used his own athletic prowess to learn the techniques. He conquered the water and eventually was able to enjoy swimming laps. He and Sharon made this part of their routine together for many years.
He had a passion for golfing, college football (Texas Tech and TCU especially), cowboy poetry, dad jokes, and spending time with his family and friends. His kindness and thoughtfulness were beyond measure.
He is survived by his wife Sharon, two children, Kathryn McCrary (husband, Shannon) and Jake Powell (fiancé, Carli Morgan), and his two sisters Renee Smith and Reesa Prather. Funeral arrangements will be held at Bluebonnet Hills on August 29th 2025.
