Sue was born on March 1, 1949, to Bill and Estelle Oldham in Dallas, Texas. She grew up in Oak Cliff and graduated from Justin F. Kimball High School in 1967. She attended the University of North Texas where she would meet the love of her life, Jimmy Calvert, and they were soon married on August 16, 1969. Sue graduated from the University of North Texas in 1971 with a Degree in Education. Jim and Sue settled in Duncanville where they would welcome Melissa Sue in 1975 and Michael James in 1979. Sue began her teaching career at DeSoto High School where she taught English and Speech. Activities she supervised included the Thespians, National Forensic League, One Act Plays, and Student Council. She was Chairman of the English Department when she moved to Duncanville High School. In her 7 years at Duncanville High School, she was instrumental in implementing Advanced Placement for Juniors, Honors Day, as well as serving as the grade level chair. In August 1994, she began teaching AP English at Grapevine High School but soon became a trainer of teachers in instructional technology. Here she supervised a new tech program impacting every child in Grapevine High School. She would receive her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction in 1995. She became an Assistant Principal in 1996 when she opened Cross Timbers Middle School in GCISD. Sue concluded her career in education in 2005 as the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum for Duncanville ISD.
Her retirement did not last long. Sue would work the front desk for Melissa and Walter’s cheer gym, Spirit Xtreme. She transitioned to this role seamlessly for a growing business, and would meet friends for a lifetime here. Sue loved the beach, reading, being with her family, and watching her grandchildren do the things they love.
The pride of Sussie’s life was her family. Gigi, as she was known by her family, was in attendance of birthdays, graduations, sporting events, baptisms and more when her health allowed her to. The grief and loss they feel is only exceeded by the joy in knowing that she is in heaven at the feet of Jesus with loved ones who went before her.
Sue was preceded in death by her mother, Nora Estelle Oldham, and her father, Billy Joe Oldham. Sue is survived by her husband of 55 years, James (Jim) R. Calvert, Jr. of Colleyville, TX, daughter Melissa Sue Meriwether and husband Walter of Colleyville, and her son Michael James Calvert and wife Meredith of Colleyville, TX. She is also survived by grandchildren William Meriwether, Wynn Meriwether, Lily Meriwether, Claire Calvert and Blythe Calvert.
A visitation for Sue will be held Thursday, May 8, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home, 5725 Colleyville Blvd. Colleyville, Texas 76034. Her funeral service will take place Friday, May 9, 2025, 2:00 PM, at CrossCreek Church, 5300 Colleyville Blvd, Colleyville, TX 76034.
