Music seemed to bring Grandma so much joy.

A few songs that come to mind for a lot of us are

“The Hukilau Song,”
“Going to the Chapel,” and
“Shackles (Praise You).”

She had such a beautiful voice.

As far back as I could remember, my cousin Terri was a part of my life. Growing up near each other, there were many times when our families spent holidays together, or we kids would spend time during our summer break at each other's house. 

As teens we thought we were 'soooo grown up' and shared things most teenage girls shared; makeup, hairstyle, and clothing tips; things going on with our boyfriends, and just life. When I first introduced her to my now husband Mike, she later asked me, "Why does your boyfriend give me that, "Go to h*ll look?" I laughed and told her that was his default face. Mike still laughs at that memory.

When Mike and I got married, Terri was my matron of honor. 

After we were both married, Terri and I kept in touch through letters and family events and when social media became a thing, we used Facebook to keep in touch.

Terri will be missed, but I know one day we will see each other again. I'm sure she will meet me at the Pearly Gates, and tell me she has spaghetti ready and add, "Jesus is coming for supper."

I love you Terri.

Her presence brought unparalleled joy and light to everyone she encountered. While she loved God deeply, His love for her was even greater. Rest well until we meet again Terrie.

Since, I learned about your transition I have been reminiscing over the years with you. Especially during my teenage years. You took me in and you not only helped me grow, but you helped my children (your grandchildren) grow. You helped me become the Mom I am today and for that I will be forever grateful for you.
 You have always been an angel in life. The only difference now is you can fly! Cheesy I know, but she liked my cheesy.🥰 I love you Terrie.  Give Mitch a high 5 for me. ❤️Rachelle

Grandma loved nature—quiet mornings outdoors, listening to the birds. She especially loved spending that time at Sheppard Annex at Lake Texoma.

My grandma taught me so much through the way she lived. This is just one of many moments.

When I went to Navy boot camp, my graduation was scheduled to take place in Great Lakes, Illinois. Because of the distance, the uncertainty of the schedule, and the very limited communication we were allowed, I told my family I didn’t want anyone to attend. I worried about last-minute date changes, travel complications, and the inconvenience of flights, hotels, and potential refund issues.

During one of the few chances I had to call home, I told Grandma, “Please don’t worry about coming. I wouldn’t want to inconvenience you if the date changes or if you have to go through all that trouble.” She didn’t say much—just calmly replied, “Okay, sweetie.”

On the day of graduation, I scanned the crowd and saw my grandma. In that moment, she taught me one of the most important lessons of my life—not with words, but through action. She showed me that I could do anything I set my mind to and that I should never limit myself by my own expectations. At that point in my life, at 19 years old, I hadn’t experienced much yet, and her quiet act of confidence and self-determination left a lasting impression on me.

Being able to share my boot camp graduation with her made the moment even more meaningful, knowing our family’s strong military roots. Her dad, Raymond Hernandez, served in the U.S. Army for 23 years and retired as a drill sergeant, and my grandpa, Richard Mitchell, also retired from the Army after serving 26 years. 

But what made it unforgettable was who she was. She was ambitious and confident—once she set her mind to something, she followed through. She seemed fearless, not because life was easy, but because she chose courage. And yet, beneath that strength was the most steady, unwavering love. 

Through her actions that day—and throughout her life—she showed me what it truly means to be both strong and loving.
