Heart of my own heart whatever befall Still be my vision O Ruler of All
The Lord called home two of his children between December 18 and 23, 2022. Warren Hurt, 93, and Peggy Goforth Hurt, 89, passed away peacefully in their sleep surrounded by their loving family.
Warren was born in October of 1929 in Pratt, Kansas to Owen and Ida Hurt. He was a graduate of Inman High School in Inman, Kansas and Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas. Warren served his country as an Air Traffic Controller in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. After graduating college, he spent his entire career working for Conoco Oil Company.
Peggy was born in November of 1933 in Coldwater, Kansas to Henry and Norma Goforth. Peggy was valedictorian of her Buffalo, Oklahoma High School class. She received a scholarship to attend the University of Oklahoma, but decided instead to attend Phillips College in Enid, Oklahoma. Upon graduation, Peggy also began working for Conoco Oil Company.
The two met in a bowling league in Ponca City, Oklahoma while working for Conoco . Both were accomplished bowlers their entire lives. They were still bowling in leagues up until 2020. The couple were married at the First Christian Church in Ponca City on July 3, 1959.
Warren served the Lord as an Elder at Spring Branch Christian Church in Houston, Texas. He taught Adult Sunday School for many years at the church, and impacted many lives through his ministry, his wisdom, and the example he set for others. Peggy likewise was a Sunday School teacher, prepared the Lord’s Supper on Sunday’s, and served in various capacities in churches.
She was doing visitation to residents of Senior Living facilities through 2019. At their passing, both were members of The Hills Church located in North Richland Hills, Texas.
The couple leave behind 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren: Michael Hurt
with spouse Brenda, Karen Bryan with spouse Sean, and Danny Hurt with spouse Shannon. Grandchildren include Stephen Hurt, spouse Stephanie, Jennifer Kremm, spouse David, Jaclyn Brown, spouse Lindsey, Bethany Bryan, Sara Bryan, Rebekah Bryan, and Christopher Hurt. Their two great grandchildren are Evelyn and Adelyn Hurt.
Warren was an avid woodworker, making all types of furniture for his family. His pride and joy was a parquet coffee table that he built in 1982. Warren designed the square table to give his children a place to play card and board games, a place to eat an afterschool snack, or a place to sit and finish homework. Warren also enjoyed driving around the country, listening to Big Band hits of the 40’s and 50’s.
Peggy dedicated her life to raising her children and playing with her grandchildren. She kept the home running like a well-oiled machine, and while she did go back to work to help pay for her children’s college educations, family always came first. Everyone who came to the house knew that the cookie jar, shaped like an elephant, would always have cookies. The grandchildren enjoyed spending the night with Grandma and frequently got to help make homemade waffles in the morning.
The loving couple were married for over 63 years. In that time, up until their recent hospitalizations, they never spent more than four nights apart. Peggy apparently couldn’t wait to get back to Warren, passing away only five days after Warren. Their marriage serves as inspiration to all of us, setting an example for the world of how a loving relationship can last a lifetime.
