Joseph William Gates passed tragically on December 27, 2025, at the age of 17. He was born in Memphis on September 24, 2008, to Jory and Beverly Gates. Joe is survived by his parents; his brother, Jack Gates; his grandparents, Fred and Sandra Rhoton, Jackie and Barbara Sanders, Deborah Pickens, and Jim Gates; and his great-grandmother, Rosalyn Pickens.
Joe’s heart was his greatest gift. He was genuine and rare. He noticed people. He listened. He cared deeply and without reservation. His love for his family was unwavering and profound, and he held them close with a loyalty that never changed. His love was not exaggerated, but it was strong, steady, and sincere. He always had time for his beloved dogs, Jock and Gus with whom he shared much comfort and joy over the years.
Joe didn’t always fit into the spaces that others seemed to occupy so easily, but those who truly knew him understood that his unique perspective made him someone you wanted to talk with forever. He was exceptionally smart, thoughtful, and observant, with a mind that could see layers and possibilities others often missed. Outside the classroom, he had a love for video games, sketching, manga, and could strategize his way to winning almost any board game, often surprising everyone with both his intellect and his dry, perfectly timed humor.
Even at this young age, Joe had already developed an ability to communicate intelligently with people of all ages and was quickly moving into adulthood.
To those fortunate enough to be close to him, Joe was real and authentic—a steady presence, a quiet comfort, a safe place. He showed his love through attentiveness, shared moments, and a sincerity that made others feel seen and valued. He brought warmth through small moments, subtle jokes, similar interests, and a presence that mattered more than he ever knew. He had the real promise of someone who would contribute significantly to society. Joe was a unique young man who comes along only once in a lifetime.
Joe’s tragic passing has left behind an immeasurable ache that words cannot fully express. His passage is heartbreaking, but his life—his kindness, intelligence, humor, and strong love will ever remain in the hearts of those who loved him. His loss will not only be suffered by his family and friends. This world he left behind will be a lot less personable, interesting, kind, generous, intelligent, and understanding.
Joe Gates will always be remembered not for the pain he carried, but for the consistent goodness he gave, the love he shared, and the lasting imprint he left on the hearts of those who loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to consider a donation to the Children’s Museum of Memphis, 2525 Central Ave., Memphis, TN 38134, in honor of Joe’s curiosity and love of laughter.
