Robert Franklin “Bobby” Bratcher Jr., 70, of Collierville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on November 19th, surrounded by his family. He departed this life after a sudden and unexpected medical event—after courageously winning his battle against esophageal cancer. Bobby knew he had fully beaten cancer before his passing, and his family finds deep comfort in this victory.
Born on December 15th, 1954, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Bobby spent his early years in Franklin before his family later made their home in Memphis. He graduated from Germantown High School and Union University, forming friendships that remained dear to him throughout his life.
From childhood onward, Bobby was known for his outgoing personality, adventurous spirit, and love for the outdoors. He played every sport he could—baseball, basketball, and football—and found joy in movement, competition, and being around people. As a Boy Scout, he developed a lifelong appreciation for nature that shaped much of who he became.
Bobby could be summed up in a single word: fun. Full of energy, tender-hearted, and always in motion, he brought brightness and warmth wherever he went. Whether at play, at work, or simply sharing a cup of coffee, Bobby made every moment feel more alive. His love for hunting, fishing, golf, and all things outdoors endured throughout his life and became treasured traditions he shared with his family and friends.
Bobby’s career in the technology and business solutions industry spanned more than 40 years, most notably over three decades with IBM as a Client Executive. He built trusted relationships across Tennessee’s public sector, helping organizations meet their goals with integrity and genuine care. He later continued his work with Ricoh USA, serving in several leadership roles and earning the respect of colleagues and clients through his strategic mind, professionalism, and contagious optimism. Even after his retirement in 2022, he remained the person people called for advice—because he always knew how to encourage, guide, and support.
Among all of Bobby’s achievements and adventures, the role he cherished most was being a father. Many knew him as a friend, coworker, or neighbor, but only his family knew the depth of purpose and joy he found in fatherhood. While providing for his family and leading them in the gospel, Bobby delighted in exploring the passions of his children. He celebrated every interest—hunting and fishing, golf, art, horseback riding—with wholehearted enthusiasm. These were more than activities; they were shared adventures and expressions of love.
He cherished watching his children grow in their faith, discover their callings, and build their own families. Seeing his son become a father was one of his greatest joys. Becoming “Poppy” to his grandson marked a treasured new chapter in his life, and his family will forever hold close the love and devotion he poured into it. He raised strong, independent, compassionate, Christ-centered children who carry forward a legacy rooted in the love and power of Jesus.
Bobby turned everything into a story worth telling. Life was never boring when he was around. His infectious optimism made people believe in endless possibilities, reminding everyone that life is meant to be an adventure. He will be remembered for his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, his humor, his joyful spirit, and his steadfast love for his family. He loved the outdoors, music and the arts, UT football, a good cup of coffee, and his loyal yellow lab, Luke.
His happiest places were anywhere he could be outside, working with his hands, or gathered with the people he loved most. He served others instinctively and loved without hesitation. His humility, strength, and hopeful outlook were a steady gift to those who knew him.
Bobby is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 46 years, Mary Suzanne Bratcher; his children, Josh Bratcher (Carolyn) and Abbey Parish (Hudson); and his grandson and greatest joy, Barrett Samuel Bratcher. He is also survived by his sister, Sandy Bratcher Rich (Lyle), and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Maleta Bratcher.
Bobby leaves behind a legacy of courage, joy, service, resilience, faith, and love. His presence will be deeply missed, and the ripple of his life will continue through his family, his friends, and the countless people he impacted.
Mr. Bratcher was cremated as he wished. A celebration of life will be held on January 24th at Mission Church, 6000 Briarcrest Ave., Memphis, TN 38120. Visitation will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by the service at 1:30 p.m.
The family welcomes flowers or memorial contributions to JOFFA and JDRF, causes deeply meaningful to Bobby’s children and dearly celebrated by him.
