Rosario (“Sal”) Como, age 98, of Haddon Township, NJ, formerly of Bayport, Long Island, NY, and Brooklyn, NY, passed away at home on Monday, December 23, 2024, with family by his side. He now joins in eternal rest his loving wife, Catherine (nee McElligott), his parents, and all his siblings, including his sisters Frances, Lucy, and Mary; and his brothers Anthony, John, and Joseph. He is survived by his children, Marie Ely (Jim) of Westmont, NJ; Peggy Conway (Steve Carroll) of Rye, NY; and John Como of Bethpage, NY, as well as his brother-in-law Michael McElligott (Bonnie) of Mount Laurel, NJ; and sister-in-law Connie McElligott of New York, NY. He was a loving grandfather to Daniel Conway, Thomas (Danielle) Conway, Joshua Ely, and Catherine Ely. Also surviving are nephews, nieces, and their families.
Mr. Como, a World War II veteran, was born in Brooklyn, NY, to Frank and Mariantonina. His father died when Rosario was only 7. After serving in Italy in 1945 and 1946, he returned home to build a home in West Babylon, NY, for his mother and sisters, while working full-time as a public school custodian. He liked to say he built the house, which still stands, three times. He met his beloved wife, an elementary school teacher, while washing windows in the Brooklyn elementary school. They married and moved to Bayport, Long Island, NY, where they raised their family with love. During long summer vacations to Canada, the Comos traveled as far as Newfoundland and Labrador. After Mr. and Mrs. Como retired, they moved to Haddon Township, NJ, in 2000 near their eldest daughter. When his wife passed in 2007, he became a devoted widower and bonded with a group of like-minded men at the Calvary Mausoleum Chapel.
