It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of William D Benzinger, who departed this life peacefully on April 12, 2026, at the age of 86. William was born on February 6, 1940, in Pittsburgh, PA to Philomena M (nee Schnitgen) and William E Benzinger.
William was a dedicated husband to Arlene (nee Hando), his loving wife of 64 years, and a devoted father to Carolyn and Bill. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren: Catherine, Michael, Katelyn, Emily, and Lauren. He is also survived by his son-in-law Mike De Melas and daughter-in-law Corinne (nee Micheletti) Benzinger. He was a constant source of strength and support, always present for his family and someone they could unfailingly count on.
He graduated as valedictorian of his high school class and went on to earn a PhD in Chemistry. He built a distinguished career as a corporate chemist with Pennwalt, Culligan, and Pall Corporation, and later shared his knowledge as a college instructor.
He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army, achieving the rank of Captain, a role he carried with quiet pride throughout his life.
Faith was a guiding force from a young age, inspired by his mother’s deep devotion. He attended Catholic school, served as an altar boy, and remained committed to his faith throughout his life, including serving as a dedicated usher at St. Norbert’s Church for many years.
He will be remembered for his intelligence, humility, unwavering work ethic, and the deep care and respect he showed to everyone around him. His legacy lives on in the values he instilled and the love he gave to his family.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Norbert’s Church on Wednesday, May 13th at 11 AM, followed by an interment at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, PA.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to St. Norbert's church.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
