Barbara Jean Sundstrom
August 6, 1941 - May 25, 2017
Loving and beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Barbara
Jean Sundstrom departed this life on May 25, 2017. Better
known as Trilby Louise, she passed quietly into the arms of
her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Born in Wheeling, West Virginia, at ten months of age
Barbara traveled to her new home in New York City in a
cardboard box, riding between her parents as they drove to
her father's new job location. This pioneering spirit
reappeared during Barbara's years in the Camp Fire Girls and
camping trips to Stokes State Forest with her husband and
children. Her love of travel took her to several countries in
the Caribbean, Central America, Europe and the South Pacific.
Barbara's working career, shortened by the arrival of twins
David and Debbie, included Project Mercury, which began
America's man-in-space program.
When driving lessons with her husband became too stressful,
Barbara drafted a non-driving friend to ride with her while she
practiced on the streets of New York City. Upon receiving
her driver's license, she immediately packed her children into
the family station wagon and set off to visit her Aunt Adelaide
in West Virginia, 800 miles away.
Baptized, confirmed and married in the Lutheran Church,
Barbara committed her life anew to Christ in a baptismal
service at Beth Sar Shalom in Manhattan, New York, on
March 7, 1971.
An avid reader, especially of the Bible, she also enjoyed
participating in women's groups at her church, membership in
the Pikes Peak Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society,
and attendance at the annual Barbara Society event.
On her 50th birthday, Barbara pronounced her name too
common. Perusing a "What Shall We Name the Baby?" book,
she found Trilby more to her liking, adding Louise for
elegance. A gifted musician who played the piano and sang in
her church choir, Trilby used these talents to compose the
Family Anthem, "Everybody Needs A Grandma, Like Trilby
Louise."
Trilby, a gifted and creative artist, worked in mixed media,
producing scrapbooks for each of her children and memoirs
of her travels. Her greeting cards for family and friends were
testimonies to her inventive mind and commitment to
recycling.
Trilby is survived by her husband of 57 years, Richard, and
their children David and Stacy (McKee) Sundstrom, Deborah
Booth, Mark and Susie (Lowe) Sundstrom, and Amy
Sundstrom, their grandchildren Kinsey and Katie Sundstrom,
Jason and Bree Booth, Cameron and Lia Booth, Steven and
Savannah Cariaga, and Jacob, Paige, Luke and Noelle
Sundstrom, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and
grandnephews. Trilby's parents, Howard and Anna
Dernberger, and sister Carole Campbell preceded her in
death.
A celebration of Trilby's life is scheduled for Saturday, June
10, at 2:00 PM at Mesa Hills Bible Church, 615 West Uintah
Street, Colorado Springs. A family graveside service will be
conducted at Evergreen Cemetery
