Barry Hartz was born on August 15, 1947, in Altadena, California, to Kenneth Russell (May 22, 1920 – February 15, 1975) and Pauline Minick (May 25, 1927 – December 23, 2001). He had one brother, Randy Paul Hartz, born September 15, 1948. Barry went home to be with his Heavenly Father on June 22, 2025, in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Barry graduated from Montebello High School in 1965. From there, he attended California State University for his Bachelor’s. While there, he met his wife Twila Fern Bishop from Leoti, Kansas, and they married in December 1968. They were married 56 years until his passing. Additionally, Barry earned his degree in political science from Cal State in December 1969, which he later used to run as the Republican primary candidate in California’s 59th Assembly District in Apple Valley.
In 1970, Barry and Twila joined the full-time staff of Campus Crusade for Christ, where they served faithfully until 1977. Barry later founded a nonprofit organization called Metro Ministries and continued in full-time ministry in the San Gabriel Valley until 1985. Soon after, Barry began a new career in the financial services industry. He worked with New York Life and later with LPL Financial, serving clients for a total of 28 years. In addition to Barry’s full time job, Barry and Twila pursued a deeper devotion to spreading the gospel by launching and leading Cru’s Student Venture ministry at Arcadia High School from 1987-1995.
Barry and Twila relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado in 2009 with a view of Pikes Peak from their deck. Barry enjoyed peaceful mornings, always beginning with a quiet time and a cup of coffee. They both enjoyed opening their home and inviting a myriad of people over for fellowship. Additionally, Barry was always generous with his time and resources, including volunteering to lead Bible studies and church classes. Barry showed dedication to his grandchildren by ensuring his and Twila’s presence at every special occasion.
Barry is survived by his loving wife, Twila; his brother, Randy, and sister-in-law Patti Hartz (Phoenix, AZ); his daughter Kristin and son-in-law Kurt McCullum (Leoti, KS); his granddaughters Allison and her husband Noah Repko (Royse City, TX), Brooke McCullum (Burbank, CA), and Audrey and her husband Russell Corathers, along with great-granddaughter Brielle (Mesa, AZ); and his son Nathan and daughter-in-law Susanna Hartz, with grandchildren Kira, Kinley, and Logan Hartz (Castle Pines, CO).
