Benny Dewayne Johnson

Benny spent his early childhood years in Missouri and overseas in Europe with his family as his father, Leroy Johnson, served his Country proudly in the United States Army.

Benny and his family moved to Colorado Springs in 1970 when his father was stationed at Fort Carson Army Base.

Benny and his four siblings attended School District 49 beginning in 1972. Benny loved participating in the concert and marching band with his sisters, Annette and Beverly, under the direction of Mr. Waters. Later, Benny began participating in year-round sport clubs. Benny played basketball under the powerful coaching of Doug Peden. Benny received several written accolades for his basketball performance in the Gazette Newspaper during this time as he worked hard to be a strong team player.

Benny graduated from Falcon High School along with his sister, Annette, in 1980. He attended the University of Southern Colorado with a basketball scholarship. He was drafted during that time to play with the European Professional Basketball League.

Benny was a faithful employee of Safeway for 27 years with 15 years of management.

Benny’s hobbies and interests included basketball, fishing and golfing. Benny also enjoyed traveling and staying well connected with his family, elementary and high school friends, college friends, and co-workers. Benny made it a point to be there for everyone and made himself sacrificially available to celebrate occasions such as graduations, birthdays, reunions and special gatherings with his network of family and friends.

Benny is preceded in death by his mother, Connealia May Johnson; both sets of grandparents; his Aunt Margaret Johnson; his Uncle Dave Durst; and his Aunt Wanda and Uncle J.C. Bagley. Benny leaves behind his son, Jordan; his father, Leroy Johnson; his siblings: Ruth Annette Johnson-Carter, Beverly LeJune Johnson, Charles Leroy Johnson (spouse Richard Oszust), Charlotte Lee Branch (spouse Donell Branch); and a large host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and co-workers.
