

Betty was born August 26, 1936 to William (Bill) Kerns and Nattie Ray Kerns in Mason County, North Carolina. She graduated high school in 1954 from Franklin High School, Franklin, North Carolina. It was here that she and Johnnie met and became high school sweethearts. Neither of them ever dated anyone else! They were married October 10, 1954 in Walhalla, South Carolina. They came within 29 days of being married seventy years.
Betty had three children:
Ed Dills (wife Terese) of Peyton, Colorado
Lynn Huff (husband Rich) of Eaton, Colorado
Jane Wood (husband Art) of Peyton, Colorado
She also had seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Betty and Johnnie moved to Colorado in 1961. They resided in Fountain until his retirement in 1997, when they moved to acreage in Peyton to be near to children and grandchildren.
She was a wonderful cook and an excellent seamstress. She also had a “green thumb” for gardening. After moving to the country, she expanded her gardening skills with her beautiful flower garden.
Betty loved the fall trips to various national parks. Her favorite was Yellowstone.
She taught children’s Sunday School for many years – she loved children.
Betty made friends everywhere she went and was known for her “Southern Hospitality”. Her famous biscuits and gravy will be greatly missed.
A funeral service for Betty will be held Monday, September 30, 2024 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Memorial Gardens Cemetery & Funeral Home, 3825 Airport Road, Colorado Springs, CO 80910, followed by a committal service from 12:00 PM to 12:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Betty's memory may be made to Springs Rescue Mission.
