David studied music his entire life. A gifted lyric tenor, he majored in music and literally sang for his supper at St. Ambrose College in Iowa. Graduating at the age of 20 with plans to become a high school music teacher, he looked too young and couldn’t get a job. He subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served two years in post-WWII Berlin. After his service, he moved to Colorado and earned several advanced degrees, concluding with a Doctor of Music Education degree from the University of Northern Colorado.
He taught at Cheyenne Mountain High School for decades, while leading the vocal music program for School District 12. The highlight of every year was the annual musical, which David directed. He also served as Director of the Colorado Springs Chorale, where he directed concerts and musical theatre productions. Following his work with the Chorale, he was Musical Director for dozens of productions for the Colorado Springs Music Theater, now the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center Theatre Company. In later years, he collaborated with longtime partner Peter Brumlick in teaching a History of Musical Theatre class at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs.
As a family man, he was a hands-on parent when his children were in school. He supported the education and various interests of his three children, and he delighted in leading family vacation adventures throughout the Midwest and Southwest.
