Dorothy grew up on a farm outside of town, before moving to the city in her early teens. She was very proud of her Nebraska farm roots. After surviving a cardiac arrest in early 2014, amazed doctors and nurses who treated her in the emergency room came to visit. She told them all “I am strong, I am from Nebraska!”
She moved to Topeka, Kansas where she met her husband. They were married in March of 1957 and she started one of the hardest jobs a person can have – a military wife. Through her husband’s numerous temporary duty assignments, deployments, and change of stations, she always kept the family and household running. In fact, she enjoyed all of the moving and setting up homes in different locations around the United States and overseas. Their assignments included Forbes AFB, KS, Carswell AFB, TX, Ramstein AFB, Germany, Bolling AFB, D.C., Hickam AFB, HI, MacDill AFB, FL and Peterson AFB, CO where they decided to retire.
Dorothy was a sweet person with a gentle soul who loved her family and devoted her life to their happiness. She enjoyed traveling, especially family vacations to Nebraska and Virginia, along with regular trips to Las Vegas and locally to Cripple Creek. She also looked forward to her regular lunches with her friends. She will be missed dearly, but knowing where she is now lessens the hurt.
She is survived by her daughter Cheryl McWhirter, son Warren Greenwood, Jr., grandsons Steven and Daniel Campbell, great grandchildren Ryan and Zoey Campbell, and her sister Alma Meyer. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents Carl and Caroline Weinert, and brothers Leonard and Howard Weinert.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Friday, January 29th at 10 am at Swan-Law Funeral Home, 501 North Cascade Ave, Colorado Springs, CO 80903. A private burial will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO.
A special thanks to the wonderful staff at Liberty Heights Skilled Nursing Facility that got her back home after two separate medical issues in 2014. They also cared for her during her last couple months.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dorothy’s memory to the American Diabetes Association at www.diabetes.org.
